This course provides coverage of advanced topics in the application of psychological theory to real-world settings. Emphasis is on the application of theories in social, organisational, and clinical psychology to practical issues of everyday life.

The discipline of psychology is grounded in and inspired by the challenges posed by human behaviour; it is also uniquely suited to informing the diagnosis, design, implementation and evaluation of solutions to these challenges.

However, when faced with a challenge, the breadth of the discipline and wide variety of behaviours it examines can make it rather hard to know where to start. Additionally, although psychological research can shed a great deal of light on how to design and roll out change programs and interventions that are most likely to work, this work is seldom taught in an integrated way.

The aim of this course is to provide students with a foundational basis for which to apply their extensive repertoire of psychological knowledge, skills and training to solving challenges and problems at an individual, local, national and even international level.

To achieve this aim, this course provides:

  • An evidence-based context of how, why and when psychological knowledge, concepts, and principles are applied in real life settings.
  • Opportunities to identify problems that can be tackled through behavioural change programs and organisational interventions, and to design evaluative frameworks for these interventions
  • Interactive platforms in the forms of guest lectures, to allow students to actively engage with practitioners, consultants, and other non-academic professionals who are implementing psychological research and theory on a daily basis. ᅠ

Task description

This assessment item draws on the content of Module 2: Behaviour Change Programs.

Students will develop a Behaviour Change Program to address one of the topics provided in the assessment folder on Blackboard. Students will justify their challenge diagnosis (i.e., the behaviour and construct they have selected to address) and explain and justify the intervention that they have designed to address the challenge. The project will provide an evidence-based rationale for both aspects (diagnosis and design) and will make the links between the diagnosis and design clear.

The word limit for this assessment is 1500 words (± 10%), excluding the reference list. The essay must be submitted in a Word document (.doc or .docx) format to allow your tutor to provide detailed feedback. A detailed marking rubric will be provided on Blackboard.

Additional assessment information

Word limits: You are expected to complete your assignment within the specified word limit. This word limit does not include your reference list (but does include in-text references), any appendices, tables and figures. Once you have exceeded this upper limit, the marker of your assignment will stop reading and you will not receive any marks for sections of your assignment beyond the word limit. Given this, it is really important to keep your assignment within the word limit. Your word processor will have a word count facility, make sure you use it.

Ifᅠ you feel the mark for an assignment is not appropriate, you should first speak to the marker (your tutor) to gain a better understanding of the mark. If you feel the mark is inappropriate after consulting with the marker, you should request a re-mark (using the request for re-mark form online). https://my.uq.edu.au/information-and-services/manage-my-program/exams-and-assessment/querying-result. Please read the criteria for a remark carefully and make sure you address it. There is a deadline for remark requests; refer to the remark policy for further details Assessment Procedure / Document / Policy and Procedure Library.

The re-mark constitutes the final mark. Keep in mind that a re-mark has one of three possible outcomes: (1) the mark may stay the same; (2) the mark may be decreased; or (3) the mark may be increased.

It is also not possible to award you extra marks because you are close to a grade cut-off. Unfortunately, a number of students will be just below the cut off in any grading system. This is a consequence of converting scores on a 100-point scale to a 1 to 7 grade scale. You will only be awarded additional marks if there has been an error in marking on the exam or assignments.

Efforts will be made to return marked assignments within three weeks of submission.
