Enrolment Note:This course has a delayed enrolment date and will open following the allocation of Honours streams. Students will be advised of the specific date each year when their Honours stream is confirmed and should contact the School of Psychology for further information. External offering is only available to those enrolled in the External offering of the Honours Thesis (PSYC4071/PSYC4091). This course has an enrolment quota of 120 students per semester (across all modes) on a first-in basis.

In this course, you will learn how to improve human performance using evidence-based applied cognitive psychology, both through training and system design. The topics will include expertise, automaticity, knowledge acquisition, how to practice, and skill transfer.

  • Thanks for enrolling in PSYC4191 – I hope you enjoy the course! My aim is to help you develop the skills to be able to improve human performance using evidence-based applied cognitive psychology, both via training and system design. By the end of this course, I want you to be workforce-ready.
  • The topics I will cover include things like expertise, automaticity, knowledge acquisition, how to practice, and skill transfer. I will be showing you how to apply what you learn in this course to improving human performance in real world settings, with the express purpose of giving you an advantage in your future career. The course will take place over ten four-hour workshops (with breaks) and you will need to bring a laptop (email me in advance if you don’t have access to one). These workshops will include lecture presentations, learning and skill development activities, quizzes (short answer format), and consultations. There will be no final examination, no separate tutorials or lectures, and no online video presentations to view outside of the workshops.

Aims and outcomes

My aim is to help you develop the skills to be able to improve human performance using evidence-based applied cognitive psychology, both via training and system design. By the end of this course, I want you to be workforce-ready.

Task description

You will be writing a proposal for the design and evaluation of a training intervention in a domain of your own choosing. Full details will be provided in the Assignment Briefing.

You may be able to apply for an extension.

The maximum extension allowed is 14 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

Late submission

A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.

Task description

You will be assigned to groups of 4-5 students for the video assignment. The video assignment will involve you working in your group to make a brief (2-4 minute) video presentation on one of the topics covered by the course. These videos will be premiered in the final workshop and then released as part of a YouTube playlist after the course (unless you tell me otherwise).

One person per team needs to submit the team's video via Blackboard.

Deferral or extension

You cannot defer or apply for an extension for this assessment.

You will be required to resubmit your research proposal having addressed all the feedback provided to you by the tutor. You will also have to submit a cover letter with your responses to all the points of feedback (as if you were responding to reviews of a journal article). Task description

There will be 9 closed-book in-class quizzes during every workshop from Week 2 onwards. The average of your scores to all these quizzes will count for 30% of your course total. If you cannot make a quiz for an appropriate reason then you can apply to Mark Horswill (m.horswill@psy.uq.edu.au) for a make-up quiz, which will be held in Week 13 (see Quiz Briefing and Course Overview documents on Blackboard for further details).

Submission guidelines

If you miss a quiz for an appropriate reason and obtain a written exemption from the course co-ordinator, then you will be able to take a make-up quiz based on the same content. All make-up quizzes will be conducted in the Week 13 workshop ONLY. There are no opportunities for completing the quizzes outside of the workshops.
