Enrolment Note:This course has a delayed enrolment date and will open following the allocation of Honours streams. Students will be advised of the specific date each year when their Honours stream is confirmed and should contact the School of Psychology for further information. This course aims to provide students with an up-to-date understanding of classic studies in (organisational) psychology as they relate to and have inspired contemporary knowledge of key topics organisational psychology.

Aims: This module aims to give students an up-to-date understanding of organizational and group processes as they relate to a range of issues in organizations and society at large.

Intended Learning outcomes: At the end of the course students should have an extensive and deep knowledge of research in social psychology and its application to contemporary organizational issues, be able to evaluate research in this area and appreciate how ideas can be used to understand and address relevant organizational and work-related issues.

Transferable skills: Emphasis will be placed on the development of presentation (oral and visual) and discussion skills. In addition to presenting and discussing research in small groups, students will also be encouraged to develop their questioning skills. Students will also gain familiarity with theories and practices currently employed in organizational settings.

This course is structured in an ‘inverted’ or ‘flipped’ format. This means that lectures are pre-recorded and made available to students to watch before coming to class. This flipped format has three key advantages:

1. Recording the lectures allows students to access (and re-access) them at a time of their choosing.

2. In the class time, we can devote time to actively discussing, and elaborating upon, the course content — answering questions and exploring issues.

3. In the class we can devote time to student presentations and the issues that these raise.

Links to the slides and videos for all lectures are accessible on Blackboard in the ‘Learning Resources’ section.

Task description

Each week, you will complete a 6-item quiz based on the lecture and reading content for the previous week. Your total score will be calculated on the basis of your best 7 out of 9 quizzes. If you miss a quiz, this will count as one of the quizzes that does not contribute to your final mark.

Deferral or extension

You cannot defer or apply for an extension for this assessment.

If you miss a class and consequently a quiz, this will count as one of your missed quizzes. Only the best 7 of 9 scores count, so you will not lose any marks by doing this.

Task description

As part of a team, students need to contribute to one 20-minute oral presentation. The purpose of the presentation is to identify a real-world problem faced by an organisation. Students will draw upon research, ideas and framework that relate to the topic being discussed that week (e.g., leadership, motivation) and use this to help understand and explain the problem. Based on their analysis, students should also think about ways to address the problem based on their approach. All presentations must be polishedrelevant and interesting, and marks will be given to the team as a whole — so in part you will be assessed on your ability to work together and co-ordinate your presentation with other members of your team. Marks will also be deducted if you go over time, so it is important to test-run your presentations to check that the timing is right. You are allowed to use a script for your presentation, but we strongly recommend that you practice delivering it—so that you can develop/refine your presentation skills and minimise your reliance on a script (as this can reduce audience engagement).

Submission guidelines

Deferral or extension

You cannot defer or apply for an extension for this assessment.

If you are unable to complete your presentation you should submit your appropriate documentation (as per the extension policy) to your tutor and/or course coordinator to arrange for an alternate time to complete your presentation.

Task description

Develop a one-page infographic on one of the following three topics:

The infographic should convey information about an important aspect of the topic and make the relevant arguments and data easy for others to understand and engage with. Your infographic should (a) convey accurate, useful and relevant information, (b) make a powerful point that is clear and easy to follow, (c) present information in a fresh and novel way, (d) incorporate visual elements so that it is attention grabbing and appealing, and (e) be well-prepared and polished. For example, this could take the form of a flow diagram that presents features of a given theoretical approach in a novel way, or a poster that communicates important ideas about a given topic to a general audience. This should be submitted via Turnitin by 1:00pm on the due date.

Submission guidelines

Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

The maximum extension allowed is 14 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

The maximum extension allowed is 14 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

For full details please review the School of Psychology Student Guidelines - Extensions and Deferred quiz/exam.
