Practical and theoretical components of psychological skills training programs designed for athletes, coaches and officials in a wide variety of sports for use with novices to elite. Consideration of various populations.

This course is a required component of the Master of Psychology (Sport & Exercise) program. Students gain experience in delivery of psychological skills from many psychological models: motivational interviewing; cognitive behaviour therapy; and acceptance and commitment approaches. Students will learn to use these models for improving motivation and long-term commitment for value aligned behaviours. They will also apply them to managing anxiety, unhelpful cognitions, and concomitant performance problems (e.g., failure of automatic skill execution). Finally, students will learn how their professional roles interact with other nearby professionals (e.g., dietetics, sports science and medicine) and practice referring clients to those specialties when appropriate.

Hurdle requirements

You must pass all pieces of assessment to pass the course. Students may be afforded two opportunities to pass any assessments (with grades determined by the first attempt). Students will be notified if they need to resubmit an assessment and will be given two weeks to resubmit.

Submission guidelines

Use the assessment submission template on Blackboard. Upload your video to you preferred video hosting provider (e.g., YouTube, Vimeo, Google Photos). Checked the sound to ensure it’s audible. If markers cannot clearly hear both client and therapist for the whole, it will be considered late until the audio is corrected. Set the video to be ‘unlisted’ so it’s not public to the internet, but is accessible by people with the link. If markers cannot access the video, it will also be considered late until the link is corrected. Attached the fidelity tool self-assessment to the assessment submission template. Upload both to TurnItIn on Blackboard.

Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

The maximum extension allowed is 14 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

Late submission

A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.
