Introduce students to issues related to the professional practice of applied sport and exercise psychology. Includes observation of group sessions, reflection on case studies, discussion of practical concerns and presentation of topical material.

The purpose of this course is to prepare students for practice in sport and exercise psychology.

Aims and outcomes

The aim of the Introduction to Applied Practice in Sport & Exercise Psychology course (PSYC7775) is to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary to critically evaluate the evidence surrounding interventions in sport and exercise psychology and to apply this knowledge in a range of contexts.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

Present psychological interventions and theories in clear and compelling ways, including through the use of multimedia and storytelling techniques

Craft interactive learning environments for clients to learn new skills in group settings, including by creating engaging and value-aligned objectives and facilitating need-supportive and motivating learning experiences

Objective

To assess students' ability to pitch, assess, plan, and evaluate a comprehensive psychological intervention program that meets the specific needs of a sports organisation. This involves creating a compelling proposal that convinces stakeholders to invest in the program, ensuring its feasibility and alignment with organisational goals.

Output

  • Written Proposal (3-5 pages):
  • Executive Summary: Provide a concise overview of the proposed program, its objectives, and expected outcomes.
  • Background and Rationale: Explain the need for the program based on your research and needs assessment.
  • Program Description: Detail the intervention strategies, session plans, and implementation process.
  • Budget Justification: Present a clear and justified budget outlining how funds will be allocated.
  • Evaluation Plan: Describe how the program's effectiveness will be measured (e.g., pre- and post-intervention assessments, feedback surveys).
  • Oral Pitch (10 minutes):
  • Presentation: Deliver a compelling presentation to a panel of “stakeholders” (instructors and peers acting as organizational leaders).
  • Visual Aids: Use PowerPoint slides or other visual aids to support your pitch.
  • Engagement: Demonstrate effective communication skills, including clarity, persuasion, and the ability to address questions confidently.
  • Q&A Session: Respond to questions and feedback from the panel, showcasing adaptability and depth of knowledge.

Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

The maximum extension allowed is 14 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

  • Engaging Introduction: Begin with an attention-grabbing introduction that highlights the importance of the skill in athletic performance.
  • Interactive Activities: Incorporate experiential exercises (e.g., mindfulness practices, role-playing scenarios) that allow participants to practice the skill firsthand.
  • Facilitation Skills: Demonstrate effective communication, active listening, and the ability to foster a supportive learning environment.
  • Debrief and Reflection: Guide participants through a debrief to consolidate learning and encourage reflection.

  • Field Questions: Respond to questions from peers acting as athletes, showing depth of knowledge and adaptability.

  • Interactive Components: Use role-plays, group discussions, or problem-solving activities where coaches practice behaviours.
  • Facilitation Skills: Demonstrate the ability to engage coaches, encourage participation, and manage group dynamics effectively.
  • Debrief and Application: Help coaches reflect on how to apply ideas in their coaching practices.
