This unit addresses the diagnosis management of developmental and adult neuropsychological disorders. Specifically, the material will cover developmental disabilities, epilepsy and acquired brain injury, focusing on the diagnosis of disorders of attention, memory, language and movement. To follow from PSYC8161 Neuroanatomy for Neuropsychologists , the teaching material will be based on human neuroanatomy and diagnostic neuroscience principles. The theoretical perspective will include principles of cognitive neuropsychology. The first three seminars will cover topics on paediatric disorders. Thereafter, the emphasis will be on rehabilitation of adult neuropsychological disorders. This unit serves as an introduction to the diversity of neuropsychological disorders and their causes.
This course introduces students to paediatric and adult neuropsychological syndromes and their management. Where appropriate, a cognitive neuroscience perspective will be adopted to understand the basis of the cognitive and neuropsychological deficits inherent in these disorders.

You will present for 30 minutes. It will be a detailed oral presentation of a neuropsychological case that you have seen, with a particular focus on one area of cognition. Areas of cognition may be:
i) Spoken Language (i.e., aphasias; receptive and expressive)
ii) Written Language (i.e., dyslexia and dysgraphia)
iii) Memory (can include any aspect; episodic, short-term, prospective)
iv) Face/object perception/recognition
v) Attention (include auditory and visual)
vi) Action (apraxia or executive function action sequencing)
vii) Executive Function (can encompass any ‘executive’ process)
viii) Awareness and Insight
Include neuropathology and history, detailed neuropsychology assessment results, formulation, action/treatment plan.
Criteria:
The presentation will be worth 40% of the overall grade for the course. The presentation will be graded according to the following four equally weighted criteria:
- Breadth of Content included in the presentation.
- Ability to draw links between the neuropsychological tests and the cognitive disorder of focus.
- Coherent formation of case.
- Delivery of the presentation (clarity of thoughts and organisation of material).
The 1-page written summary (single spaced, 12 pt font) will be worth 10% of the overall grade for the course, with a focus on clarity of written expression (coherence and synthesis of contents as a short case summary).
