This Practicum course provides the opportunity to develop clinical skills in treatment settings. The emphasis of the second placement is applying cognitive, behavioural and Art Therapy treatment approaches, developing advanced interpersonal skills with clients and the use of Art Therapy for clinical self inquiry. Art Therapy Field of Study requirements will be met by this course.
This course is designed to enable you to implement knowledge and skills developed during foundation knowledge and skill courses in an appropriate mental health practice environment. You will undertake 200 hours ofᅠart therapyᅠpractice of which a minimum of 50 hours takes the form of provision of mental health services to clients. Other activities appropriate for this course include observation of the practice of more experienced mental health practitioners, participation in team meetings and clinical case discussions, and record keeping. The emphasis of the second placement is applying cognitive, behavioural and Art Therapy treatment approaches and developing advanced interpersonal skills with clients. Art Therapy Field of Study requirements will be met by this course.
You will receive a minimum of 10 hours of clinical supervision from an approved onsite supervisor and, in addition, participate in a weekly art therapy supervision group facilitated by an art therapist and provided by the University.
Aside from the 200 supervised practice hours, an important element of this course will be a regular weekly art therapy supervision group in the form of reflective practice and regular journalingᅠto assist you to integrate theory and practice. You will attend this group throughout your placement and be expected to complete other reflective practice tasks during the semester. The group will address specific needs and questions related to the experiences of the students during this course, providing a learning forum as well as an opportunity to report on your experiences. You will receive guidance from an experienced mental health practitioner and art therapist.

Task description
You should be engaged in a work environment that provides the opportunity to work with people seeking help for concerns that may include mental health problems. In this practicum the major focus will be on ensuring that you provide, in a form appropriate to the workplace, a mental health assessment, formulate and implement a treatment plan using evidenced-based, workplace approved and art therapy interventions, as well as ensuring that the work takes place in an effective and sensitive manner that builds therapeutic alliance. You will have 200 hours of work in practicum environment that should include at least 50 hours of direct work with clients. You will have an on-site supervisor who will meet with you for at least 10 hours of supervision during the semester. You will meet in weekly supervision tutorials with an experienced art therapist and fellow students. Refer to the Learning Activities section for further information regarding contract, logs, evaluation reports and meetings with on-site supervisor and university lecturer/course co-ordinator.
CRITERIA AND MARKING
You will attain and pass placement by completing 200 hours of practicum (consisting of 50 direct client contact hours & minimum 10 hours supervision), submit client-contact & non-client contact practicum logs of hours and submit a Mid-Semester and End-Semester Clinical Placement report signed off by your onsite supervisor. You will attain and pass this placement when you have been assessed as Fully Achieved on the Final End of Semester Evaluation Report.

Task description
You are to upload a weekly Reflective written and visual Journal to demonstrate the development of self-reflective practice. The use of visual imagery is used as a tool for self-reflection, to demonstrate the use of art making, where appropriate, to explore complex issues involved in the interactions between trainee art therapist, clients and/or placement setting.
You should make at least 6 Learn.UQ online journal entries, that reflect on the experience of working in a practice environment and in learning about the practice of art therapy and mental health. These entries should be regular, uploaded weekly, and be an appropriate combination of personal, case reflection, practice literature, and research-informed reflection (where relevant) with the written ideas of others appropriately referenced. Visual reflective art is to accompany each written reflection.
Marking is based on how effectively you engage in self-reflection, connect your reflections to relevant literature, upload your visual and written journal at least one day before the weekly group supervision class, and demonstrate ongoing reflection on your learning throughout the semester.
Criteria and Marking
- The Journal contains at least 6 entries that have been written and uploaded weekly to the Learn.UQ Journal submission point. Each entry is required to be the length of 300-400 words maximum and incorporate visual/art-based reflection. The journal entries are accessible and able to be understood. Appropriate referencing and literature used where relevant.
- Journal entries are focused on learnings, experiences, reflections and insights relating to working in mental health care settings and the use of art therapy.
- You are able to discuss your feelings, thoughts, behaviours, actions, knowledge and skills in the role of an emerging Art Therapist and critically reflect on your professional use of self and the influence on your current and future practice. In combination, the entries demonstrate that you have used reflection on personal experience, practice experience, client work, organisational/workplace experience and published literature to develop your capacity to work in a mental health setting and make effective and sensitive therapeutic relationships with clients.
This assessment task evaluates your abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI). You are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Task description
You will present a current case study, sharing work with a client/s that you have engaged with in your workplace/practicum. A PowerPoint/Prezi/visual format is required to guide the presentation and allow fellow students to view and consider the work and discuss with the presenter. You are required to submit a copy of the slides to the marker before the tutorial begins, on or before the presentation date.
Criteria and Marking
- You are able to provide an Art Therapy de-identified Case Study presentation that describes the context of the work, a summary of the client story and presenting concerns, a clear formulation of the client presentation and/or diagnosis, the treatment plan/hopes and share the interventions conducted with the client/s thus far.
- You are able to demonstrate assessment and treatment planning skills and make clear recommendations regarding the next steps in your work with the client/s. You are able to discuss Art Therapy interventions that may be relevant to this client presentation.
- The case presentation is clearly articulated, and you are able to discuss your case study with fellow students and assessor. Case presentation is a maximum 15 minute duration with 5 mins following for discussion. The accompanying visual presentation complements the oral communication. The presentation is well written, formatted, uses consistent academic style and referencing throughout. The visual presentation includes relevant diagrams, tables and visual images.

Task description
You are to present and analyse a portfolio of self-reflective, self-portraiture, and response art images or pieces that are created by yourself as part of an inquiry into the professional identity of yourself as a trainee therapist. You are to utilise various art therapy processes throughout the inquiry and conduct a critical analysis of the process and creations and your influence on professional insight, awareness, and growth. The style and art process chosen is open to the individual however, you are required to utilise concepts, theories, interventions, and ideas relating to the use of art-making and professional development from the field of art therapy and psychotherapy and referenced as appropriate. Overall, the essay presents a vivid narrative of your journey in self-discovery, curiosity, and inquiry into the professional self in the context of professional development and art therapy theory and concepts.
Criteria and Marking:
- You include a maximum of 3 art images/objects/creations with a focus on self-reflection and response art to clinical experiences and/or self-portraits of the professional self with a focus on professional identity concepts such as values, strengths, challenges, skills, knowledge, and therapeutic alliance experiences where relevant.
- For each creation, you will provide a photo of the creation, provide a brief explanation of the creation and how you experienced the creation, the directive style used, the materials, and modality used.
- You will conduct a critical analysis on the art-making experience, art images/creations, art products, and other activities used to reflect on the creations and utilise art therapy, psychotherapy, and other literature/theory/knowledge/research to deepen their inquiry into your professional self.
- A discussion explores your learning about the art and creative processes used, analysis of the use of art making for self reflection/self-supervision and how these supported self discovery and development of the professional self. The conclusion makes recommendations for future art based professional development processes, considering both individual learnings and from art therapy practices broadly.
- This assessment is written in an essay style, with your experience used as a platform for combining reflective thinking and critical analysis. The essay uses APA7 referencing and is within a maximum of 3000 words.

Art Therapy Placement You will undertake 200 hours of mental health art therapy practice consisting of a minimum of 50 hours of direct client work and 10 hours supervision with onsite supervisor.
