PXMH7112 focuses on the clinical skills required to deliver Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) in diverse mental health settings. As the second course in the psychotherapy skills sequence, it supports students to apply cognitive and behavioural models through assessment, formulation, and structured treatment planning. Emphasis is placed on integrating theory with practice in preparation for clinical application.

PXMH7112 will assist you in developing an effective and sensitive mental health practice. You will develop and/or strengthen core assessment, formulation and treatment skills in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), while developing the ability to critically reflect on its application in settings relevant to your own psychotherapy practice. You will participate in a series of seminars and an in-person workshops, guided by an experienced CBT clinician and tutor. Learning will be supported through presentations, readings, experiential tasks, and role-plays. All assessment have a clinical focus. We look forward to working with you this semester.

Task description

This assessment involves two interrelated components:

  1. A written case report, where you will present a detailed account of your clinical work (or a fictionalised equivalent) with a client, family, or group, using a cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) framework.
  2. An in-class case conference presentation, where you will present your case to peers and the tutor in a format that mirrors a multidisciplinary team meeting.

The written case report should include:

  • A clear introduction to the client and presenting issues (real or fictionalised)
  • A description of assessment findings, including relevant contextual or systemic factors
  • A CBT-based case formulation
  • A treatment plan linked to the formulation
  • A brief account of the therapeutic process, including treatment strategies and observed or anticipated outcomes

The case conference presentation will be scheduled during class time and provides an opportunity to develop professional case presentation skills. It also supports authentic assessment by enabling you to demonstrate understanding of your case and receive peer and tutor feedback.

Assessment Criteria

Detailed criteria and a rubric will be provided in class and on Blackboard. You will be assessed on your:

  • Case conceptualisation and application of CBT principles
  • Clinical reasoning and treatment planning
  • Clarity and structure of written and oral communication
  • Engagement with feedback and evidence of independent understanding

Academic Integrity Note

You are welcome to use AI tools to support your writing process; however, all use must be appropriately acknowledged in your submission. You may be asked questions about your case report during the in-class presentation to confirm authorship and understanding.

Task description

Task Description

In this assessment, you will have the opportunity to explore an area of CBT practice that is either highly relevant to your current mental health work or aligned with an area you wish to develop. The task is designed to deepen your theoretical understanding, enhance your clinical reasoning, and develop professional presentation skills.

You will deliver a 15 minute seminar on a specific CBT application, focusing on either:

  • A particular mental health presentation (e.g., OCD, insomnia, trauma), or
  • An application of CBT to a diverse population (e.g., youth, culturally responsive CBT, neurodivergent clients, couples, families)

Your presentation should follow a structure that moves from broad conceptual understanding to specific application:

  • A brief literature review summarising key research on efficacy and effectiveness
  • A treatment overview, including key components and relevant adaptations
  • A practice-based applied segment, such as a client vignette, mock intervention, or demonstration of a CBT technique in context

You must submit your PowerPoint slides prior to the scheduled presentation.

Live Q&A

Following your presentation, there will be a Q&A session facilitated by the tutor and peers. You may be asked to reflect on your clinical decisions, justify your intervention choices, or respond to hypothetical challenges.

This Q&A is also designed to authenticate your understanding of the presentation material and ensure the work reflects your own clinical reasoning.

Use of AI Tools

You may use AI tools to support the development of your slides, provided use is clearly acknowledged. Use of AI during the live presentation or Q&A is not permitted. You must demonstrate your own understanding of the material.

Task description

This self-directed activity invites you to track your development as a CBT practitioner across the semester. The CBT Integration Log offers a structured space to reflect on key learning experiences — including the in-person workshop, seminar discussions, assessment tasks, readings, experiential activities, and your own clinical or professional context.

You will complete at least five entries over the semester. These entries will help consolidate your understanding of CBT concepts and practices while supporting the development of your identity as a psychotherapist who can meaningfully incorporate CBT into an integrative approach.

Throughout the semester, your instructor will review selected entries and provide personalised feedback and guidance to support your learning. This formative feedback is intended to help you strengthen your reflective practice and deepen your skills in CBT assessment, formulation, and intervention.

You may choose which learning activities to focus on in your entries. Resources and experiential tasks will be grouped thematically on Blackboard to support your exploration (e.g., CBT formulation and assessment, behavioural interventions, cognitive interventions, arousal modification).

Submission and Format

  • Submit via the Blackboard journal tool. All entries are only accessible by course staff.
  • The total word count should be approximately 3000–4000 words across a minimum of five entries.
  • Informal but professional language is acceptable. You may use dot points, diagrams, or a voice-to-text reflective style.
  • AI-generated content is not permitted in this task, as it is intended to reflect your personal learning process.
  • You will receive brief formative feedback on selected entries throughout the semester.
