UQ’s Student Strategy (2016) highlights the importance of “broadening student access to alternative international experiences” as well as engendering “Work integrated learning (WIL) experiences that explicitly integrate theory with practice within a purposefully designed curriculum to foreground employability.” This course is designed for student entrepreneurs who are selected to attend an international immersion programme. The course provides opportunities to undertake authentic innovation and entrepreneurship-related work experiences, exposure to startup practices through fieldwork, study tours and work shadowing at various international locations.

Aims and outcomes
To provide students with rich practical first-hand learning experiences in working alongside innovators and entrepreneurs to actualise their academic knowledge to the process of founding, investing and growing an early stage startup business.
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

Build social capital through establishing networks with entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship mentors within the startup ecosystems.

Acquire practical skills and knowledge toward enhancing your entrepreneurial mindset and self-efficacy.

Apply innovation and entrepreneurship theory to the process of founding, investing and growing an early stage startup, including how to clearly communicate your business case and value proposition.

Show an awareness of the fundamental challenges that entrepreneurs face when launching new ventures.

Task description
Students will reflect on their personal development resulting from their international immersion experience. This is an essay type assignment in which they will illustrate self-awareness, personal and professional growth, as well as improved understanding of the cultural and business-related complexities in entrepreneurial endeavours.
The assessment tasks evaluate students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Task description
Students will produce a short video presentation (max 5 minutes) about their immersion experience. They will talk about their experience, in particular the complexities and challenges they observed in their encounters with entrepreneurs and community leaders. They will reflect on the challenges they had to overcome and the network connections they were able to build. Finally, they will give account of the knowledge and skills they have gained and their personal growth.

Students will identify and analyse an innovation and/or entrepreneurship issue relevant to their immersion experience. The assessment piece must demonstrate thoughtful application of entrepreneurship and innovation theories. They must conduct research and submit an academic based paper using reviewed academic sources.
