The scientific method is the particular focus of this course. Special attention is on the application of scientific methods to substantive research problems and issues in functional areas of business including marketing, management and international business.

This is an intermediate to advanced level research methods course. Knowledge of the basics of research process is presumed from the study of introductory (undergraduate) level courses in research methods.

This course focuses on how to conduct quality research that could assist students in formulating the research problem, identifying research questions, conceptualisation, and identifying appropriate research designs. Overall, completion of this course should aid students in the preparation of research proposals and/or in the construction of a research thesis at honours/Masters/PhD level.

This course will provide students undertaking a research thesis with the foundational knowledge required to successfully conceptualise, design and implement their research ideas. Students will acquire the necessary skills through a variety of interactive classroom activities and assessment items that encourage critical thought and enquiry, develop practical research design techniques and communication skills. Students will also hear from some of UQ Business School's esteemed research design experts as well as those that serve as editors of top-tiered journals to learn what constitutes quality research across the many business management disciplines including but not limited to: Management, Marketing, International Business, Strategy and Tourism.

Task description

Based on the knowledge acquired in class regarding what a literature review should be, you are required to construct a literature review based on a research topic of interest. The review must include:

1. An introductory paragraph that outlines the topic area of interest - i.e. what is your literature review about?

2. A critical review of the existing body of knowledge surrounding the chosen topic area including the identification of theoretical framework to which the chosen area of interest belongs.

3. A synthesis of the findings to date in this field and the relevant knowledge gap.

4. A maximum of three research questions that will guide your enquiry and address exposed knowledge gap.

Assessment length: 3,000 words

More detail regarding this assignment and a detailed assessment rubric will be provided in class.

This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
