This course brings together theoretical, empirical and reflective dimensions of Applied Linguistics from a critical perspective based on work done throughout your coursework program. It supports you to explore relationships among theory, research, and practice through a focus on the products and processes of your coursework experience, enabling you to reflect on your own particular strengths and weaknesses. The course will also allow you to develop a record of learning in the program that can also be used as a catalogue of qualifications, skills, knowledge, and views relevant to a career as a language professional. This course should be undertaken in the final semester of your program.
The Applied Linguistics Student Portfolio & Synthesis is a #2 project undertaken in the student's final semester of studies. It is based on work done throughout the student’s time throughout their coursework program. The Portfolio & Synthesis represents both the products and process of the coursework experience, and will reflect the student’s particular strengths and weaknesses. The Portfolio & Synthesis is both comprehensive, in that it covers all aspects of the program, and integrative, in that it allows the student to explore relationships among theory, research, and practice. The project also allows each student to develop and reinforce a strong professional foundation, and represents a record of learning in the program that can also be used as a catalogue of qualifications, skills, knowledge, and views relevant to a career as a language professional.

Aims and outcomes
The Portfolio & Synthesis represents the student’s efforts and accomplishments during the entire program. It is designed to meet the following requirements:
(a) the task must be valid, in that it is natural (something that students find intrinsically worthwhile, rather than one exclusively motivated for the purposes of assessment), and its outcome is real and useful for the student as a language professional;
(b) the task must be useful, in that it provides a means for the student to bring together the different thematic areas of the course, and to make new connections;
(c) the task must be valuable, in that it reflects the student’s work in the program (bothᅠ processes and outcomes), and represents a significant resource for the student’s career as a language professional.
The goals of the Portfolio & Synthesis Project
The project has the following goals:
(a) to integrate materials and ideas from different courses in the program, and to explore the relationships among theory, research, and practice that emerge from this task;
(b) to stimulate clear and logical thinking about the student’s work as a body of scholarship and as a knowledge base, taking the student beyond the requirements of any particularᅠsubject or assignment, and encouraging the student to integrate their experience in the program;
(c) to foster critical and creative thinking about the student’s own work and scholarship in the field; the Synthesis is intended to motivate students to make connections, revise earlierᅠunderstandings, and develop alternative explanations while creating aᅠprofessional teachingᅠportfolio;
(d) to provide clear evidence that the student has achieved the level of mastery appropriate to a Master of Arts degree in Applied Linguistics from The University of Queensland.

Task description
You will develop an E-Portfolio using either the software Adobe Cloud Express, WiX, or if you already have your own Blog or Vlog, you are encouraged to use your own channel to develop this E-Portfolio.
This assessment provides you with an opportunity to review all the assignments you have done thus far, and decide on which past assignments you deem most relevant to your professional, academic and personal development. It will enable you to:
- Articulate learning achievements and strengths such as professional attributes and transferable skills and knowledge
- Create a showcase of learning achievements and develop curation skills through identifying learning outcomes from previous course assessments
- Develop reflective writing skills through integrating theoretical knowledge, research and practice.
- Create a framework of practice and professional goals for a chosen future career
This assessment consists of three parts, and each is submitted and assessed separately. You can decide if you would like to complete the E-Portfolio as one or as three sections based on your own progression. You are encouraged to take responsibility for your own learning, and be creative as a language professional.
PART 1 – Academic Portfolio: Key learning outcomes (LO)
Due Date: (WEEK 4)
TASK DESCRIPTION
In Part 1 of this assessment, you will collect and curate artefacts for your portfolio by considering and selecting assignments from each of the courses you have completed in your master’s program (excluding SLAT7852).
First
Curate the most essential assessment items (ideally 1 per course, maximum of 12).
For each course you have completed in your master’s program, you should select one assessment item within that course and briefly explain the key learning outcomes of that assignment (in your own words). Please note that each key learning outcome statement should be between 30-50 words (excluding course and assignment titles). The display/ organisation can be in chronological order, or in categories designed by yourself.
Second
You must explain and critically justify why you have chosen each assignment piece (50-100 words each). You may like to consider the following questions for your reflection:
- Which knowledge, attributes or skills are you trying to communicate with this artefact?
- How does this artefact illustrate your skills, knowledge, attributes and experiences? i.e. What did you learn or gain from this experience?
- How does this artefact relate to your professional goals/future career direction?
e.g.
Course: SLAT7705 Structure of Languages
Assignment title: Presentation on Korean
Key learning outcomes: Identifying the linguistic structure of a new language in a short period of time – this promotes understanding of potential errors made by language learners. Knowledge on form-function is emphasised
Please note that each Key learning outcome statement should be between 20-30 words, towards a total of 150 – 400 words (excluding course and assignment titles). The display/ organisation can be in chronological order, or in categories designed by yourself.
Second
You must provide an ‘Introductory Note’ that captures the gist of the overall organisation of the key learning outcomes for the courses you have selected. (This is NOT included in the word count).
Explain and justify why you have chosen each artefact (50-100 words):
- Which knowledge, attributes or skills are you trying to communicate with this artefact?
- How does this artefact illustrate your skills, knowledge, attributes and experiences? i.e. What did you learn or gain from this experience?
- How does this artefact relate to your professional goals/future career direction?
Please complete the assessment item on Adobe Express, WiX or your own Blog/Vlog.
The aim of this assessment is to build a content page for your Final Virtual Portfolio.
You should consider the potential audience of your portfolio while reviewing your coursework and preparing this E-portfolio.
PART 2 – Academic Portfolio: Reflections
Due Date: (WEEK 6)
TASK DESCRIPTION
In Part 2 of this assessment, you will reflect on two selected assignments from Part 1, and include these reflections in your E-portfolio (Maximum 1200 words – approximately 600 words each)
You should consider papers, projects, or materials that have made significant contributions to your learning towards becoming a competent language professional.
Compose your reflection using the 4Rs framework, i.e. Report, Relate, Reason and Reconstruct on your transition from student to emerging language professional, including the development of your professional practice framework (if any).
Your framework must synthesise (integrate) your curated artefacts of learning (from Part 1), and articulate how you will operate as a professional in your field of practice.
Each reflection should also discuss the value of the assignment in your development
‘About Me’ – about yourself should also be presented, either in the format of a prose or multimedia. (This is NOT included in the word count).
Reminder
The aim of this assessment is to build your academic/professional background within your Final Virtual Portfolio.
You should consider the potential audience of your portfolio while reviewing your coursework and preparing this E-portfolio.
PART 3 – Academic Portfolio: Bibliography
Due Date: (WEEK 8)
TASK DESCRIPTION
In Part 3 of this assessment, you will provide a bibliography of 20 to 30 professional and academic sources derived from items in Parts 1 and 2 of this assessment, and include the bibliography as part of your E-portfolio. (Not to exceed 500 words)
You should consider articles, books, websites, monographs and/or other materials that you deem significant and useful as a postgraduate learner and a language professional.
Consider the following questions while compiling your bibliography (literature and resources).
- Which artefacts, i.e., articles, books, websites, monographs, etc., have contributed most to your learning and professional development?
- Which artefacts best reflect your knowledge of the field at the end of your course?
- In terms of professional development, which artefacts do you feel constitute a valuable professional resource?
The bibliography must be presented in APA 7 format.
A Rationale explaining your professional framework and bibliography. You should consider the overall collation/organisation of the bibliographic choices, and why they are presented and organised in the way you have chosen.
Articulate and justify the development of your professional framework (500 words):
- Background theory/practice of your professional framework
- Indications of your professional goals
- Projections of your career direction
Reminder
The aim of this assessment is to build an academic/professional resource bank for your Final Virtual Portfolio.
You should consider the potential audience of your portfolio while reviewing your coursework and preparing the E-portfolio.
