This course examines the range of preparation strategies that coaches must consider in order to implement a fully operational and successful training plan. Both situational and contextual analysis is integral to best planning practices. Coaches will be able to tailor specific programs to individual athletes needs.
In recent times, particularly in Australia, there has been an emphasis on athlete pathways including coaching and player development frameworks. This course recognises the challenges that confront coaches and pathway managers in negotiating the journey around developing elite athletes.
The course focuses on two key areas, firstly the complexity in implementing talent identification and development programs and some implications around long term athlete development and age-appropriateᅠcoaching. Secondly the course focuses on the role of the coach as a key decision maker in terms of the long term development of the athlete, including but not limited to performance on and off the field as well as other factors associated with the athlete's journey. It is also important to recognise the role of the athlete and the value of involving them in the planning process. The inclusion of the athlete in terms of the planning process is linked to self-determination theory.
The course aims to enhance the coaches understanding of the issues associated with talent identification and development as well as develop the coaches’ skills in evidence-based decision making associated with the implementation of practical strategies to assist athlete performance. Managing the development pathway can be complex taking into account stages of specialisation, selection pathways and the impact of variable development and maturation rates. Finally capturing the talent development environment and its application to the coach's practice is explored. The course incorporates a self analysis component as well as a collaborative approach in order for coaches to critically analyse their reasons for implementing programs as well as maximising the “buy in” from their athletes. The major drivers in creating the "buy in" is self determination theory and performance profiling. Finally the coach is required to develop a series of "coaching interventions" which take into account the strengths and weaknesses of the athlete and the level of performance required to succeed at the elite level.ᅠ

Aims and outcomes
To provide students with a thorough understanding of elite athlete development and the impact of knowledge from a range of disciplines. It will allow students to assess the demands of performance in competition, determine strengths and weaknesses of an athlete, involve the athlete in the evaluation and goal setting processᅠand thenᅠdevelop appropriate training interventions to be incorporated into a 12 month coaching plan.

Task description
Provide a sports performance inventory covering physical, technical, mental and tactical skills. Where possible incorporate feedback in determining the priority of the various skills forming the inventory (e.g. research, other coaches and the athletes themselves). Provide measurable benchmarks based on the highest level of performance. The inventory and benchmarks will be used to develop a performance profile template.
Develop a suitable methodology by which the selected athlete can self evaluate their current performance profile as well as the coach/s evaluation for comparison purposes. Analyse the results of this evaluation by comparing with the original performance profile provided by the coach.

Talent Identification and Development In order to develop an appropriate development plan, it is important that the coach/student understands the importance of modelling their specific sports requirements. This map or model can be used to identify key performance factors, including predictive measures which can be used to not only identify talent but to evaluate an athlete's progress along the development pathway. Students are required to develop a "sports profile" or model for their sport. Learning outcomes: L01, L02, L03 |
Multiple weeks From Week 5 To Week 9 |
Not Timetabled |
Interview or survey Investigate and design an appropriate process for completing a performance profile. This process should engage the athlete and where available other members of the high performance team (coaches and sports science consultants). Activities include the completion of a profile from both the athlete's and the HP team's point of view. This will allow the identification of both training and performance objectives based on both quantitative and qualitative information. |
Multiple weeks From Week 10 To Week 13 |
Not Timetabled |
12 month Operational Training Plan Based on the information gleaned from the profiling process the coach can design a specific 12 month training plan for their athlete/s. This plan should include feedback processes which can measure the progress of an athlete against agreed performance goals in the areas of physical, technical, mental and tactical skills. Learning outcomes: L06 |
