A key skill for today's high performance coaches is the management of a high performance sport program which has far broader responsibilities than the traditional role of the coach. This role requires the coach to clearly understand the business environment within which they operate and use contemporary management skills to improve the performance of athletes through effective and efficient program management. This course develops the students knowledge and understanding of key concepts relating to high performance program management including: Strategic & Operational Planning, Resource Management , Financial Management, Marketing, Risk Management and Human Resource Management. The problem based approach allows students to apply knowledge gained in this course to their own coaching practice,
High Performance Programs are complex and in many cases could be considered as systems, These systemsᅠrelyᅠon effective high performance management. The key areas put forward include planning, directing, managingᅠand evaluatingᅠa performance program in sport.ᅠThe aim of this course is to provide students with concepts and tools required to manage and lead within the high performance environment. The course addresses this by providing students with authentic learning experiences covering leadership in high performance programs, managing the high performance environment, high performance practice and the implementation of day to day activities. Topic areas covered include leadership and culture, social power and the role of the coach along with an overview of strategic and operational planning, resource management, managing athletes and staff, performance enhancement, evaluating high performance programs and selection and recruitment. Finally students are required to develop an effectiveᅠperformance review process on their own sport or sporting organisation or an extensive case study provided in the learning materials, including a situational analysis, findings, discussion and recommendations for the sport or organisation. There are resources set up as a scenario (case study) for any students who don't have access to enough information/data within their own coaching context.

Task description
This task is divided into two components. The first task is to provide a review on the impact of social power within a high performance program. They have a choice between interpreting the provided Marlin's Scenario or to use their own sports coaching context.
The second task is to design a high performance review for the provided Marlin's scenario. The review will reflect the structure of a report provided to the board or CEO of a sporting organisation or agency. Students will outline the methodology in conducting the review in the areas of collecting data on leadership, culture, planning alignment, athlete welfare, general management of athletes and staff, recruitment and performance (on and off the field). Students are to provide some key recommendations with rationale.
Please refer to the Learning Materials (Monitoring High Performance Programs) section in Blackboard for more information.
