A critical review of the literature to inform future research.
The course provides an opportunity for students to commit significant time to collecting, synthesising and evaluating existing empirical research on a topic of their choice. The Directed Study will extend scholarly skills developed in earlier coursework and is intended to serve one or more of the following purposes:
- Informing and advancing current coaching practice.
- Contributing the ongoing development of coach-specific knowledge and resources.
- Preliminary work on a topic that might form the basis for a subsequent coursework thesis (e.g. SPCG7031) or higher research degree (e.g., MPhil or PhD thesis).
- Research on a topic of special interest, possibly developing from the student’s previous study, professional activities or research interests.
Note that the Directed Study may involve the assignment of a content-specific expert to oversees the study (i.e. academic supervisor).
Course requirements
Assumed background
Students who undertake this course are assumed to have a sound knowledge of human movement studies and a developing knowledge at the post-graduate level. It is recommended for students who plan to undertake a Directed Study to leave this work until they have completed most of their coursework requirements. It is recommended that it be taken prior to or in parallel with SPCG7031ᅠThesis.

Aims and outcomes
This course aims to provide students with opportunities to develop basic research skills related to systematic searches, collation, synthesis and evaluation of empirical literature on a selected topic. Students will also develop their academic writing skills in developing a critique of literature related to their nominated subject area.

Task description
Coaches must nominate their preferred topic for investigation accompanied with a sound and well-supported rationale drawing upon aspects of their previous coursework, coach education materials from their sport, hot topics in the popular press, and/or other sources.

Coaches must submit a thorough critique of the literature associated with their chosen topic making use of the previously agreed upon methodology and assessment submission format

This tasks in the course have been designed to be challenging, authentic and complex. Whilst students may use AI and/or MT technologies, successful completion of tasks in this course will require students to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which artificial intelligence will provide only limited support and guidance.
A failure to reference generative AI or MT use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
To pass this assessment, students will be required to demonstrate detailed comprehension of their written submission independent of AI and MT tools.

Formulating the topic Coaches will begin to formulate a topic for their Directed Study through various means including (but not limited to) revisiting aspects of their previous coursework (e.g. previous assessment submissions), Coach education materials from their sport (e.g. psychology modules), and hot topics in the popular media (e.g. concussion). Directed study proposal Coaches will examine methods for conducting critical literature reviews with the aim of developing a sound approach for their Directed Study. At the end of this period, students will submit a proposal that includes a strong rationale for the topic that they chose (derived from Task A) and a sound method for conducting their review.
