Development of competencies in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of paediatric, adult and complex dysphagic cases as well as an understanding of the assessment and management of swallowing and communication disorders following head and neck surgery.
This course aims to enable you to develop foundation knowledge in the area of swallowing and to develop professional competencies in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of paediatric and adult swallowing disorders. It also provides an understanding of the management of swallowing and communication disorders associated with tracheostomy management and head and neck cancer.ᅠ
This course will build on anatomy, physiology, and introductory courses taught during first and second year. In particular, students should review the anatomy and physiology of the oral cavity, larynx, pharynx, and respiratory mechanism as well as the SPCH1100 lecture on the topic of "Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders". It is assumed that students will have an understanding of normal speech production and vocal function.

This course aims to enable you to develop foundation knowledge in the area of swallowing and to develop professional competencies in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of paediatric and adult swallowing disorders.

This mid-semester exam will assess content covered in lectures during Weeks 1 - 4 of the semester. Questions will be made up of a mix of multiple choice, multiple-response , in-line choice, matching/pairing, hotspot, and inline gap match questions. This is an online, non-invigilated assessment.

In this assignment, students are provided with case information and case data for an adult or paediatric dysphagia case. Students can select which case they complete their assignment on. Students are required to 1) introduce the case they have selected and present the relevant case information and research literature regarding the client’s medical diagnosis and presenting feeding/swallowing disorder; 2) integrate the available information and assessment results to provide a diagnostic summary; 3) outline their recommendations and management plan supported by an integration of case information and research literature; 4) develop an educational handout/resource to support the family’s learning.
Case data will be released in week 5 of semester.

The maximum extension allowed is 14 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.
An application for an Extension of Assessment Due Date for medical grounds and/or other exceptional circumstances shall be submitted by lodging the appropriate (online) form with supporting documentation by the due date . Students will be notified of the outcome of their request via the myRequests section of my.UQ (and an email sent to their student account).

Late submission of assessment items will attract a penalty of 10% of the mark per day late or, for work graded on a 1-7 scale, a deduction of one grade per day (including weekends and public holidays), unless a formal extension has been organised prior to the due date and time.
Requests for extension of assessment due date must be made online, via your my.UQ portal prior to the submission date and time. Late applications may not be accepted. The request must also contain documentation satisfactorily supporting the request. If an extension is approved, you will be notified via your my.UQ portal and the new date for submission provided.

Final marks falling between whole percentages will be rounded to the nearest whole percentage. Tie-breaking will be conducted using the round half up method whereby half-way values are always rounded up, meaning, for example, that 89.5% and above will be rounded to 90% and 89.49% and below will be rounded down to 89%.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This course contains ‘must pass’ assessment items, as follows:ᅠFinal Exam (week 9).ᅠYou must pass this item to pass this course overall, i.e. even if your final percentage mark is 55% or higher the individual ‘must pass’ assessment items must have been passed.
