This course focuses on integration of knowledge about practice areas and consideration of how this knowledge is used in the diverse roles and opportunities available for speech pathology practice. This course introduces students to current and emerging roles and technologies associated with speech pathology practice.

Aims and outcomes

Speech pathology practice is continually evolving and speech pathologists fulfil a variety of roles in a wide range of contexts and communities. This course uses an inquiry-based learning approach to present real-life service delivery issues within different role and community contexts. 

In SPCH7214, students will independently engage with online learning resources while having authentic inquiry-based learning experiences with peers and teaching staff in tutorials. Student participation is required in all learning activities. The format of the course provides more flexibility with learning, but the associated workload is similar to that of a traditional course.

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

Describe the roles and ethical responsibilities of a speech pathologist in an evolving profession (SPA PS Domains/Standards 1.1 1.7, 2.1 2.7, 3.1 3.6).

Describe the application of current and evolving technologies in speech pathology practice (SPA PS Domains/Standards 1.1 1.3, 1.5, 1.7, 2.6, 3.2, 3.4 and 3.5).

Communicate the knowledge, skills and attributes of a speech pathologist in preparation for future job opportunities (SPA PS Domains/Standards 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, 3.6).

Task description

This assessment requires students to demonstrate understanding of the application process for a speech pathology role by preparing a professional application package. 

Students will respond to one (1) of three (3) job advertisements by writing a cover letter, resume, and answering the selection criteria as specified in the advertisement. Students will also provide a mock LinkedIn profile that will be viewed by your prospective employer as part of the application process. A detailed task description and rubric will be provided on the SPCH7214 Blackboard site. 


This task has been designed to be challenging, authentic and complex.  Whilst students may use AI technologies, successful completion of assessment in this course will require students to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which artificial intelligence will provide only limited support and guidance. A failure to reference generative AI use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct. To pass this assessment, students will be required to demonstrate detailed comprehension of their written submission independent of AI tools. This assignment is to be completed individually.

Submission guidelines

Submit one (1) electronic copy via the SPCH7214 Blackboard site, attaching a signed SHRS coversheet. 



Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

The maximum extension allowed is 14 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

Requests for extension of assessment due date must be made online, via my.UQ > my.Requests at least 24 hours prior to the submission date. The request must also contain documentation satisfactorily supporting the request. If an extension is approved, you will be notified via your my.UQ portal and the new date for submission provided.

Late submission

A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.

Integrating Technology into Future Clinical Practice Video Assignment

Task description

The goal of this assignment is to encourage students to critically reflect on the role of technology in clinical settings and develop strategies for effectively integrating technological tools into their future practice.


Students will create a 5-6 minute video presentation outlining how they plan to incorporate technology into their clinical work as a future speech-language pathologist. In the video, students should:

  1. Introduce the Role of Technology: Briefly explain the importance of technology in modern speech-language pathology. Highlight how technology can enhance assessment, intervention, and client engagement.
  2. Identify Specific Technologies: Discuss one (1) specific technological tool (e.g., telepractice platforms, speech therapy apps, AI-driven assessment tools, VR for social skills training, etc.). Explain the purpose of the tool/s and the populations or disorders they are best suited for.
  3. Discuss Application in Clinical Practice: Describe how this chosen technology would be integrated into therapy sessions, assessments, and/or client- and family-centred education. Provide examples of potential therapy activities, case scenarios, or strategies that incorporate these tools.
  4. Discuss Considerations and Challenges: Reflect on potential challenges related to using technology (e.g., accessibility issues, ethical considerations, client preferences) and propose solutions or strategies to address these challenges.
  5. Consider Future Outlook: Share thoughts on how evolving technologies might continue to impact the field and how you plan to stay current with new developments.

  • Students may use slides, screen recordings, and/or visual aids to enhance their presentation. 
  • Submit the video in a commonly supported format through Blackboard. A copy of your script for this presentation should be uploaded as a separate file to the same Blackboard submission portal.

Task description

Students will work in groups of 4-5 to present a 20-minute Clinical Bite on "The Future of Speech Pathology". Each group will need to develop a persuasive, innovative, and engaging learning activity to inform the audience of how they perceive the future of speech pathology practice to look in a specific context. Groups will be allocated different contexts including Aged Care, Education, Health, Private Practice, NGO, Research, Community Health or University Education to consider in their presentation.

This task has been designed to be challenging, authentic and complex. Whilst students may use AI and/or MT technologies, successful completion of assessment in this course will require students to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which artificial intelligence will provide only limited support and guidance.

To pass this assessment, students will be required to demonstrate detailed comprehension of their written submission independent of AI and MT tools.

Task description

Students will participate in an individual job interview online via Zoom. Students will be interviewed for a new graduate speech pathology position in one (1) of the three (3) speech pathology settings that were introduced in Employability Part A.


Each student will participate in a 15-minute interview. Students will need to prepare for all three (3) speech pathology positions; and will be advised approximately 15 minutes prior to the interview which position they have been shortlisted for, and therefore what position they will be interviewed for. During the 15 minutes prior to the interview students may access resources and notes, however, these cannot be accessed during the interview. Students are not required to submit any written documentation in this part of the application process (i.e., Part B).


A detailed task description and rubric will be provided on the SPCH7214 Blackboard site. The Interview component will be recorded.

This assessment task is to be completed in-person. The use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools will not be permitted. Any attempted use of Generative AI may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Deferred exams can be requested for this assessment item. Please apply for a deferred exam if there are exceptional or unavoidable circumstances, or as a one-off discretionary request. Deferred exam requests should be submitted as soon as possible, and no later than five calendar days after the date of the original exam. Course grade description: A cumulative percentage from all assessments of 45-54%. A grade of 3 will be awarded to a student who achieves a final mark of 55% or higher but who does not pass the must-pass assessment items noted below.

4 (Pass) 55 - 64

Demonstrated evidence of functional achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: A cumulative percentage from all assessments of 55-64% and has passed the 'must pass' assessment items noted below.

5 (Credit) 65 - 74

Demonstrated evidence of proficient achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: A cumulative percentage from all assessments of 65-74% and has passed the 'must pass' assessment items noted below.

6 (Distinction) 75 - 84

Demonstrated evidence of advanced achievement of course learning outcomes.

7 (High Distinction) 85 - 100

Demonstrated evidence of exceptional achievement of course learning outcomes.

Additional course grading information

Final marks falling between whole percentages will be rounded to the nearest whole percentage. Tie-breaking will be conducted using the round half up method whereby half-way values are always rounded up, meaning, for example, that 89.5% and above will be rounded to 90% and 89.49% and below will be rounded down to 89%.


IMPORTANT NOTE: This course contains ‘must pass’ assessment items - Employability A: Professional Application Package for a Speech Pathologist Position and Employability B: Individual job interview. Students must pass these items to pass the course overall.

Supplementary assessment is available for this course.

Additional assessment information

Supplementary assessment can take any form, for example, an oral or a written exam. Students who are eligible and approved for a supplementary assessment and the form of assessment is an examination, are expected to be available to sit the supplementary exam during the University’s Deferred and Supplementary examination period. Once approved, supplementary assessment cannot be rescinded by the student.

Tutorial

Roles and opportunities in contemporary speech pathology

Students are required to attend two (2) tutorial sessions each week from Week 8 to Week 12. These tutorials will follow an inquiry-based learning approach and will focus on discussion and problem-solving around content delivered via UQ Extend.

Students are encouraged to use the SPCH7214 Ed Discussion Board on the eLearning Blackboard site. The course coordinator will regularly monitor the Ed Discussion Board and respond to student questions. ᅠIn the interest of equity, there will be no response to individual emails regarding assessment.
