This course focuses on the management of clients within the child, adolescent and adult mental health systems and the justice system. The course includes consideration of the speech pathologist’s role in managing complex issues in speech pathology clinical practice, and a focus on collaboration and the development of community partnerships.

Aims and outcomes
This course focusses on the role of the speech pathology profession in providing individual, targeted, and universal services. You will formulate person- and family-centred management plans to address social, emotional, behavioural, educational and occupational goals for people with communication and swallowing difficulties in the mental health and justice settings. You will understand the value of working with communities using public health, health promotion, and co-design approaches to invest in more sustainable and effective approaches to reduce health inequalities and achieve positive outcomes for individuals with communication and swallowing difficulties across the lifespan.

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

Describe and advocate for the role of speech pathology to meet the everchanging needs of a community including mental health and justice.

Identify and develop evidence-based community health promotion and prevention activities to address social determinants of health inequity in speech pathology.

Critically reflect on social determinants and ways of knowing and being to support the development of culturally responsive services in collaboration with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, Elders and cultural leaders.

- The presentation will be held during the first SPCH7233 tutorial in Week 3.
Task description
In groups, students will be asked to respond to a contemporary issue and advocate for individuals in a community. Students will first complete a written task, which will include a needs analysis for their assigned community (20% weighting). They will discuss the role of the speech pathologist in supporting the needs of that community with reference to recent literature. This needs analysis is due on Monday 9th December, 2024 at 4pm.
Groups will then present a call to action in the form of an oral presentation focusing on a solution to the contemporary issue, outlining a community proposal, and justifying why their proposed solution should be funded and implemented (20% weighting). This presentation will be held during the first SPCH7233 tutorial in Week 3.

Students will submit a video diary or written reflection on what they currently do to manage their own mental wellbeing, and actions they can take to ensure they are implementing sustainable strategies as they progress with their career.

Task description
This assessment has been designed to be completed by students after they engage with Module 4 of the Understanding Cultural Safety modules. Students will use a provided with a cultural safety continuum reflective tool and template to develop a professional action plan. They will identify three specific actions they will take to advance their culturally safe practice, and link these actions to the stages of the cultural safety continuum (i.e., unlearning, learning, applying, reflecting, embedding).

Task description
In this assignment, students will be introduced to a young person in the justice system with mental health needs. Students will be provided with initial assessment data and asked to develop an assessment and intervention plan for the case, as well as identifying recommendations for referrals to other professionals. All components must be supported by evidence from research literature and show knowledge of the youth justice and mental health context.

Final marks falling between whole percentages will be rounded to the nearest whole percentage. Tie-breaking will be conducted using the round half up method whereby half-way values are always rounded up, meaning, for example, that 89.5% and above will be rounded to 90% and 89.49% and below will be rounded down to 89%.
This course contains MUST PASS assessment items. You must pass these items in order to pass the course overall (i.e., even if your final percentage mark is 55% or higher the individual MUST PASS assessment items must have been passed.

Resubmission/Resit of Assessment Items
The School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences supports the concept of resubmission or resitting of failed assessment items in specific and defined circumstances. In this course, the Case-based assignment (individual) component is eligible for consideration of the resubmission option if the assessment item was submitted on time.
After resubmission, the maximum result is a pass mark for that assessment component. Students who are granted a resubmission for an assessment item and do not submit by the scheduled date will not be permitted to reschedule the assessment. Students will be eligible for a maximum of ONE resubmission or resit option for this course.
