The final semester of theᅠMaster of Speech Pathology Studies (MSpPathSt) program is a transitional stage for students.This course is designed to equip students with knowledge, skills and attributes a speech pathologist is required to demonstrate as they transition to their professional practice across a variety of different contexts. Content in this course will be provided in a flipped lecture series, and will be expanded upon in interactiveᅠinquiry-based learning tutorials. The Community Education Quality Improvement project isᅠdesigned to build knowledge and behaviours/skills of community members who are supported by speech pathologists in the workplace.

This course is a capstone course for students enrolled in theᅠMSpPathSt programᅠonly.

This course has two (2) modules:

1. Transition to Professional Practice;

2. Community Education Quality Improvement Project.

Information that will introduce concepts and learning activities relevant to the course will be provided to studentsᅠat the beginning of the semester. Studentsᅠwill be allocated to a Community Education Quality Improvement project at this time so that they may begin planning for this project during their block placement in the first 6 weeks of Semester 2. The community education quality improvement project is designed to give students real-life experience in planning and developing community education programs and materials, and illustrates the important role of community education and quality improvement in speech pathology scope of practice.

Task description

This will be a group project involving groups of approximately 8-9 student members. The speech pathology community has been consulted and they have nominated projects that they feel would benefit community members.

Please see lecture notes and FAQs on Blackboard for further information related to this assessment.

This assessment will involve the following stages:-

1. Your group will be allocated a project and a mentor speech pathologist in Orientation week prior to Week 1 of the semester. Details regarding projects, mentors, and student group allocation will be provided on the course Blackboard site. You will begin your planning for this project in Week 1.

2. Your group will work with the mentor to design and implement their proposed project and produce appropriate resources so that implementation is possible. To complete your task you will need to complete independent research, collaboration with the mentor, communication and collaboration with your group members and development of appropriate resources and evaluation procedures. This is a large professional project, therefore it is expected that each student will spend a minimum of 15 hours of concentrated academic and clinical related learning to complete this task.

3. During the semester you will meet with the course coordinator to discuss the project progression.

4. ASSESSMENT STAGE 1: Friday 23rd August by 1pm (5%)

Student groups will submit a Zoom recorded video of a powerpoint presentation (template provided). This video will be presented by one (1) member of the group and will provide a summary of key points related to the Community Education Quality Improvement project. The video duration should be approximately three (3) minutes. This assessment piece is worth 5 marks (5% of the total marks for this course).

5. ASSESSMENT STAGE 2: Monday 14th October by 1pm (30%)

Student groups will submit the following:

1. The community education resources developed for the project (worth 25 marks; 25% of the total marks for this course), and

2. A word document (worth 5 marks; 5% of the total marks for this course).

The word document should:-

(a) LIST the aims of the project and the knowledge and behavioural objectives from the perspective of the target audience;

(b) DETAIL a process for evaluating the community education project's impact on the desired target audience using a robust quality improvement cycle. Examples of proposed project evaluation tools should be included as attachments.

Formatting requirements: The word document should NOT EXCEED three (3) single-sided pages and use 12 point Times New Roman font, 2.5cm margins, and double line spacing. Note that references, the resources, and any attachments are NOT included in this page length.

6. ASSESSMENT STAGE 3: Friday 15th November (15%)

Student groups will present their projects to staff and peers who attend the Community Education Conference Presentation Day. This presentation will be 10 minutes in length and all students must contribute to the delivery. Students are required to present at a high standard that would be expected at any professional conference. This stage of the assessment is worth 15 marks (15% of the total marks for this course).

The presentation should include:

(a) Information about the target audience for the project;

(b) The aims/goals for the project and the knowledge and behavioural objectives for your target audience;

(c) The approach taken (the content, medium and strategies used) used for the project;

(d) The rationale for the selection of resources and materials developed for the project;

Submission guidelines

The Stage 1 presentation will be submitted by 23rd August at 1pm as a Zoom recording uploaded to Blackboard. The Stage 2 resources and word document are to be submitted via Turnitin by Monday 14th October at 1pm. A coversheet signed by all group members should be attached. The Stage 3 group presentation will occur in-person on Friday 15th November.

  3. How would you as a speech pathologist demonstrate advocacy for the importance of person, family and community-centred care and why is this important?

You are required to submit a Zoom audiovisual recording addressing the above questions. This recording is to be 6-7 minutes in length and will be submitted through the SPCH7814 eLearning Blackboard site. You will present your recording in association with a 1-slide electronic poster/PowerPoint slide outlining the key information you are presenting, and submit a copy of your script for this presentation.

Use of Generative AI in Assessments

Assessment tasks in this course evaluate students' abilities, skills, and knowledge without the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Resubmission/Resit of Assessment Items

The School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences supports the concept of resubmission or resitting of failed assessment items in specific and defined circumstances. After resubmission, the maximum result is a pass mark for that assessment component. Students who are granted a resubmissionᅠfor an assessment item and do not submit by the scheduled date will not be granted an extension.

In this course there are no must pass assessment items and therefore the resit of an assessment item is not applicable.
