Management of complex clinical issues in speech pathology requires integration of information from a range of sources, and an awareness of ethical issues impacting speech pathology practice. This course will address the complex clinical issues that arise in areas such as disability, mental health, and aged care. Students will gain an understanding of ethical issues surrounding the practice of speech pathology.
This course focuses on integrating knowledge, skills, and professional competencies to address complex issues in speech pathology practice. In this course, students will learn how to plan, provide, and manage speech pathology services for people with complex communication and swallowing disorders, specifically in aged care, mental health, and disability. Students will be equipped with ethical decision-making skills and counselling in speech pathology contexts.

Aims and outcomes
This course aims to develop skills in planning, providing, and managing speech pathology services for clients with complex communication and swallowing difficulties in aged care, mental health, and disability;ᅠincorporating ethical decision making and counselling in speech pathology contexts.

Task description

This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Task description
Using an ethical decision making model, students are required to submit a written report describing an ethical issue relevant to speech pathology practice, outlining their preferred course of action, justifying this course of action, and stating why other alternatives were ruled out. Students will be required to use relevant legislation, Codes of Ethics, and workplace policies to justify their actions. Students are required to use an ethical issue that they have encountered in their clinical placements.
This assignment is to be completed individually. A detailed task description and template will be provided on the SPCH7827 eLearning Blackboard site.
This task has been designed to be challenging, authentic and complex. Whilst students may use AI technologies, successful completion of assessment in this course will require students to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which artificial intelligence will provide only limited support and guidance.
A failure to reference generative AI use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
To pass this assessment, students will be required to demonstrate detailed comprehension of their written submissions independent of AI tools.

Late submission
A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.
Late submission of assessment items will attract a penalty of 10% of the mark per day late or, for work graded on a 1-7 scale, a deduction of one grade per day
(including weekends and public holidays), unless a formal extension has been organised prior to the due date and time.

Task description
Based on the material presented in weeks 7-11, students will participate in an individual "job interview". Students will be interviewed for a new graduate speech pathology position in one (1) of three (3) speech pathology settings:
- Planning, providing, and managing speech pathology services for clients with complex communication and swallowing difficulties in aged care;
- Planning, providing, and managing speech pathology services for clients with complex communication and swallowing difficulties in mental health; or
- Planning, providing, and managing speech pathology services for clients with complex communication and swallowing difficulties in disability.
Each student will participate in a 15-minute interview. Students will need to prepare for all three (3) speech pathology positions and will be advised at the beginning of the interview, which position they have been shortlisted for, and therefore what position they will be interviewed for.
A detailed task description will be provided on the SPCH7827 Blackboard site. The Interview component will be recorded.

Final marks falling between whole percentages will be rounded to the nearest whole percentage. Tie-breaking will be conducted using the round half up method whereby half-way values are always rounded up, meaning, for example, that 89.5% and above will be rounded to 90% and 89.49% and below will be rounded down to 89%.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This course contains ‘must pass’ assessment items, as follows: NDIS Module 1 Quiz, Ethics Report and Interview. You must pass theseᅠitemsᅠto pass this course overall, i.e. even if your final percentage mark is 55% or higher the individual ‘must pass’ assessment items must have been passed.

Resubmission/Resit of Assessment Itemsᅠ
The School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences supports the concept of resubmission or resitting of failed assessment items in specific and defined circumstances. In this course, the Ethics Decision-Making Report and the Planning, Providing and Managing SP Services Interview assessment task are eligible for consideration of the resubmission/resit option if the relevant assessment item was completed on time.
After a resubmission/resit, the maximum result is a pass mark for that assessment component. Students who are granted a resitᅠfor an assessment item and do not attend onᅠthe scheduled date will not be permitted to reschedule the assessment.
