Develops theoretical and practical skills regarding special populations (e.g., disabled, children elderly, women athletes) and conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, epilepsy) in relation to exercise and sports medicine.

SPMD7002 is a core course in the Masters of Sports Medicine, Australia's longest running post-graduate program, and covers specific materials across learning areas identified by an international Delphi consensus for Sports & Exercise Medicine programs (Humphries et al. SPMD7002 is concerned with central clinical principles, knowledge, skills and evidence-based practice related toᅠ"special populations" and "special conditions" in Sports & Exercise Medicine. SPMD7002 addresses issues relevant to athletes and exercising individuals with special needs and characteristics. An extensive range of topics are covered in the course syllabus for SPMD7002 as per the core list of online lectures and materials below:

SPMD7002 assumes no background except for the entry requirements to the program and follows on from SPMD7001 (Basic Principles of Sports Medicine). As with all courses within the Sports Medicine program, all materials within SPMD7002 will be accessed in online format only. A core set of video lectures is presented by sports medicine experts such as Dr Anita Green, Dr Peter Friis, Professor David Jenkins , Professor Peter Brukner and other experts.ᅠ Updated and new materials will be added from time to time in line with topics relevant to special populations and conditions in sports medicine.

Course requirements

Assumed background

SPMD7002 is a core course in the postgraduate Sports Medicine suite.ᅠ It is specifically targeted at General Practitioners wanting to increase their clinical knowledge in the area of sports and exercise medicine. SPMD7002 has no pre-requisite course or background material except for the entry requirements of MBBS or equivalent to the program. As with all courses within the Sports Medicine program, all materials within SPMD7002 will be accessed in online format only and involves all off-campus (external) self-directed learning. A core set of video lectures covering the important principles and interdisciplinary practices in Sports and Exercise Medicine is presented by your program coordinators and a team of experienced sports medicine practitioners. Updated and new materials maybe added to your course from time to time in line with topical and emerging topics relevant to sports and exercise medicine. Reading of textbook chapters and additional course articles is required in SPMD7002.

SPMD7002 is a FULLY online course involving self-directed, external learning. The flexible online design of the course allows materials to be viewed 24/7 with accessing / re-accessing of materials available at any stage of the semester. We do however, REQUIRE you to commence with the week 1-2 materials and work your way through as per the sequenced schedule for LEARNING & ASSESSMENT requirements. From time to time new and/or updated video lectures may be added to the course syllabus - notification of this will be sent to your UQ email through means of BlackBoard.ᅠ

Aims and outcomes

Through the course learning and assessment materials in SPMD7002 we are aim to create opportunities for you to:

  • enhance your understanding of special populations and conditions in Sports and Exercise medicine
  • integrate your knowledge about the multi-disciplinary nature of sports and exercise medicine
  • develop, evaluate and apply clinical knowledge regarding special populations and conditions in Sports and Exercise medicine
  • assess the multi-faceted aspects of Sports and Exercise medicine

Achievement of these aims will be facilitated through the following learning and assessment materials:

  • engaging with learning materials provided in a comprehensive series of expert online lectures / presentations
  • reading and integration of learning materials from textbook chapters (Brukner & Khan. Clinical Sports Medicine hich is available online for those students not having a hard copy) and selected journal / web readings
  • completion of a series of online multiple choice exams
  • completion of 2 video case studies

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

demonstrate, from a SPORTS & EXERCISE MEDICINE perspective, enhanced clinical knowledge and understanding of issues regarding "special populations" including females, children, athletes with disabilities, the tired athlete, mental health conditions in athletes, cardiac conditions in athletes, respiratory conditions in athletes, exercise/dietary aspects in athletes as well as other topics.

LO2.

demonstrate, from a sports and exercise medicine perspective, a sound understanding of issues regarding "special conditions&#34 in sports medicine including infectious diseases,
heat illness, gastrointestinal conditions, drugs, cardiovascular problems, asthma etc.

LO3.

critically review literature and present on special populations and conditions in Sports Medicine as part of the 2 Case Study Videos

Task description

(Pre-Census) Online Multiple Choice Question Exam to assess learning of materials covered in web video lectures & appropriate textbook chapters for SPMD7002.

Materials from Weeks 1 to 4 (inclusive) will be covered.

The MCQ exams are structured within an overall framework of 2 minutes per question - for example a 50 minute time period would be set for a 25 question MCQ quiz.

Each question has only one (1) correct answer and no marks are deducted for incorrect answers.

Access to the online exam will be through your normal SPMD7002 Blackboard site. 

This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge WITHOUT the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

SPMD7002 involves accessing the online lecture materials, presentations and associated readings on your SPMD7002 Blackboard site.
