SPMD7004 is a core course in the Masters of Sports Medicine, Australia's longest running post-graduate program, and covers specific materials across learning areas identified by an international Delphi consensus for Sports & Exercise Medicine programs (Humphries et al. SPMD7004 is a course related to common / important musculoskeletal injuries of the lower limb and trunk of relevance to the field of Sports and Exercise Medicine; specifically SPMD7004 focuses on the assessment and management of lower limb and trunk injuries involving pelvic and lower back injuries, hip, groin, thigh and knee injuries; leg, ankle and foot injuries.ᅠ There is a core set of web-based video lectures and joint examination demonstrations presented by sports medicine and orthopaedic specialists. From time to time these materials maybe edited / added to in line with emerging / changing clinical practice and knowledge. Reading of the relevant chapters in the Brukner & Khan textbook is required in this course.
Course requirements
Assumed background
SPMD7004 is a core course in the postgraduate Sports Medicine suite. It is specifically targeted at General Practitioners wanting to increase their clinical knowledge in the area of sports and exercise medicine. SPMD7004 has no pre-requisite course or background material except for the entry requirements of MBBS or equivalent to the program. As with all courses within the Sports Medicine program, all materials within SPMD7004 will be accessed in online format only and involves all off-campus (external) self-directed learning. A core set of video lectures covering the important principles and interdisciplinary practices in Sports and Exercise Medicine is presented by your program coordinators and a team of experienced sports medicine practitioners. Updated and new materials maybe added to your course from time to time in line with topical and emerging topics relevant to sports and exercise medicine. Reading of textbook chapters and additional course articles is required in SPMD7004.

SPMD7004 is a FULLY online course involving self-directed, external learning. The flexible online design of the course allows materials to be viewed 24/7 with accessing / re-accessing of materials available at any stage of the semester. We do however, REQUIRE you to commence with the week 1 materials and work your way through as per the weekly sequenced schedule for learning & ASSESSMENT requirements. From time to time new and/or updated video lectures may be added to the course sylabus - notification of this will be sent to your UQ email through means of BlackBoard.ᅠ
Aims and outcomes
Through the course learning and assessment materials in SPMD7004 we are aim to create opportunities for you to:
- enhance your understanding of lower limb and back injuries in Sports and Exercise medicine
- integrate your knowledge about the multi-disciplinary nature of Sports and Exercise medicine
- develop, evaluate and apply clinical knowledge regarding lower limb and back injuries in Sports and Exercise medicine
- assess the multi-faceted aspects of Sports and Exercise medicine
Achievement of these aims will be facilitated through the following learning and assessment materials:
- engaging with learning materials provided in a comprehensive series of expert online lectures / presentations
- reading and integration of learning materials from textbook chapters (Brukner & Khan . Clinical Sports Medicine) and selected journal / web readings
- completion of a series of online multiple choice exams
- completion of 2 video case studies

Task description
(Pre-Census) Online Multiple Choice Question Exam to assess learning of materials covered in web video lectures & appropriate textbook chapters for SPMD7004.
Materials from Weeks 1 to 4 (inclusive) will be covered.
The MCQ exams are structured within an overall framework of 2 minutes per question - for example a 50 minute time period would be set for a 25 question MCQ quiz.
Each question has only one (1) correct answer and no marks are deducted for incorrect answers.
Access to the online exam will be through your normal SPMD7004 Blackboard site.
This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
