Develops theoretical and practical skills focussing on the cardiovascular system during exercise. Topics covered include physiological responses of the cardiovascular system in response to exercise, exercise ECG interpretations and the role of exercise in the primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

SPMD7005 - Clinical Exercise Science for Sports Medicine 1.

SPMD7005 is a core course in the Masters of Sports Medicine, Australia's longest running post-graduate program, and covers materials across learning areas identified by an international Delphi consensus for Sports & Exercise Medicine programs (Humphries et al. SPMD7005 focuses on key principles in "Sports & Exercise Science" (e.g., exercise physiology, sports nutrition, sports and exercise psychology, physical activity promotion etc) within the multidisciplinary field of sports medicine.ᅠA broad range of topics, with an emphasis on evidence-based and clinically important aspects, are covered in the course syllabus for SPMD7005 as per the comprehensive list of online lectures and materials below:

SPMD7005 assumes no background except for the entry requirements to the program. As with all courses within the Sports Medicine program, all materials within SPMD7005 will be accessed in online format only and involves all off-campus (external) learning. A comprehensive syllabus of online lectures, case based learning and related materials has been developed to facilitate the learning and integration of materials in SPMD7005.

Updated and new materials will be added to from time to time in line with topical and emerging topics relevant to sports and exercise medicine. We will email you during the semester when new or updated materials are uploaded for your course.

Reading of textbook chapters and course papers is an essential requirement for SPMD7005.ᅠ

An understanding of material covered across SPMD7001, SPMD7002,ᅠSPMD7003,ᅠSPMD7004 and associated readings in the Brukner and Khan Clinical Sports Medicine textbook isᅠ helpful but not essential for your SPMD7005 course.ᅠ

SPMD7005 is a FULLY online course involving self-directed, external learning. The flexible online design of the course allows materials to be viewed 24/7 with accessing / re-accessing of materials available at any stage of the semester. We do however, REQUIRE you to commence with the week 1 materials and work your way through as per the weekly sequenced schedule for learning & ASSESSMENT requirements. From time to time new and/or updated video lectures may be added to the course sylabus - notification of this will be sent to your UQ email through means of BlackBoard.

Aims and outcomes

The overall aim of SPMD7005 is to promote the development of knowledge on the underlying principles and practices of "Sports and Exercise Science".ᅠ

Through the course and assessment materials in SPMD7005 we aim to create opportunities for you to:

  • further develop your clinical knowledge and reasoning in the application of evidence based sports science.
  • further develop your understanding on important physiological responses / adaptions to exercise
  • further develop your understanding on the basic principles of nutrition in sports and exercise
  • further develop your understanding on the basic principles of sports psychology for the athlete / exercising individual
  • further develop your understanding on the role of physical inactivity for patient health and well-being within the multidisciplinary field of sports and exercise medicine

Achievement of these aims will be facilitated through the following learning and assessment materials:

  • engaging with learning materials provided in a comprehensive series of expert online lectures / presentations
  • reading and integration of learning materials from textbook chapters (Brukner & Khan. Clinical Sports Medicine) and selected journal / web readings
  • completion of a series of online multiple choice exams
  • completion of 2 video case studies

Online Video Lectures (Lecture Series): SPMD7005 involves self-directed learning from a comprehensive series of expert online lectures and materials associated readings and textbook chapters (Brukner & Khan). The lectures and associated course materials which are organized in fortnightly "blocks" are progressively sequenced from Weeks 1-2 to Week 13 . The lecture series have been planned and developed by the joint course co-coordinators - Dr Anita Green, Dr Peter Friis and AProf Craig Engstrom.
