A supervised, structured research project in an area appropriate to clinical sports medicine.

SPMD7009 involves an individual research project focusing on Sports and Exercise Medicine. The project, which will build on independent research and scholarly skills developed in earlier coursework, may involve a number of approaches. The most commonly undertaken approaches for SPMD7009 projects include: Narrative Reviews, Systematic Reviews (with or without Meta-Analysis), Case Studies / Series, Clinical Audit;ᅠ other options may be considered pending negotiation with the program coordinators. Given the diverse backgrounds, interests and circumstances of the general and medical practitioners in the Masters program, there is considerable flexibility around topics chosen for the SPMD7009 projects not withstanding topics MUST have clear relevance toᅠsports and exercise medicine.

Typically, project reports will be 10 -15 pages in length (exclusive of references) and be reflective of the #4unit semester long course.

Course requirements

Assumed background

An individual research project will be undertaken in an area appropriate to clinical sports medicine and conducted on a topic selected of relevance to the clinical practice of the individual general practitioner. The project, which will build on independent research and scholarly skills developed in earlier coursework, may involve a number of approaches. The most commonly undertaken project is a systematic review involving integration and analysis of the most recent research iterature on a chosen topic in sports and exercise medicine. Other projects, such as an empirical survey or case series on a topic of special interest, possibly following on from the student's previous study, professional activities or research interests, may be undertaken during the semester (13 weeks) pending consideration of participant availability, ethical approvals,ᅠ project scope etc.

Additional timetable information

SPMD7009 entails a self-paced approach for the completion of your project - it needs to be commensurate with a #4 unit semester long course. Comparison with the times RECOMMENDED for your previous 2# courses (e.g., SPMD7001,ᅠSPMD7002, SPMD7003, SPMD7004 and SPMD7005) serve as the reference for SPMD7009.

Aims and outcomes

In your SPMD7009 research project we aim to create opportunities for you to:

  • identify and formulate a project topic of relevance to sport and exercise medicine
  • effectively engage with information and online technologies to collect and organise information and ideas within an evidence based approach
  • critically analyse and integrate research from high quality sources and clinical studies
  • summarise and provide well justified decisions from the recent literature using an evidence-based approach
  • clearly and concisely convey the above in written format
  • provide a comprehensive insight into current and likely future developments and clinical practice for your chosen topic

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

LO1.

effectively communicate a comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of the research field related to your self-selected topic in sports and exercise medicine

Task description

An individual research report on a topic / project appropriate to clinical sports and exercise medicine as typically guided by an area previoulsy covered in coursework in SPMD7001, SPMD7002, SPMD7003, SPMD7004 and SPMD7005 or of clinical interest for the individual practitioner.

Assessment for SPMD7009 is based on:

1. Research Proposal (300 - 500 words) that outlines the research topic and planned areas (e.g., epidemiological / etiological information, diagnosis, management) for the planned SPMD7009 project. This assessment item is worth 10% of the final grade.

2. Final Report (10 - 15 pages, excluding references). This assessment item is worth 90% of the final grade.

The research project will evaluate students' abilities, skills and knowledge WITHOUT the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Course grading

Full criteria for each grade is available in the Assessment Procedure.

Grade Cut off Percent Description
1 (Low Fail) 0 - 24

Absence of evidence of achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: Fail (0-24%) No critical analysis (see above); poorly written / inadequately referenced / ill-structured paper; inadequate/no use of figures / tables highlighting / summarizing important information; frequent grammatical / spelling errors.

2 (Fail) 25 - 44

Minimal evidence of achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: Fail (25-44%) No critical analysis (see above); poorly written / referenced / structured (headings / sub-headings) paper; inadequate/no use of figures / tables highlighting / summarizing important information; frequent grammatical / spelling errors.

3 (Marginal Fail) 45 - 49

Demonstrated evidence of developing achievement of course learning outcomes

Course grade description: Fail (45-49%) Limited / no critical analysis (see above); satisfactory written / referenced / structured (headings / sub-headings) paper; inadequate use of figures / tables highlighting / summarizing important information; notable grammatical / spelling errors.

4 (Pass) 50 - 64

Demonstrated evidence of functional achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: Pass (50% - 64%) Some critical analysis (see above); satisfactory written / referenced / structured (headings / sub-headings) paper; use of figures / tables highlighting / summarizing important information; notable grammatical / spelling errors.

5 (Credit) 65 - 74

Demonstrated evidence of proficient achievement of course learning outcomes.

6 (Distinction) 75 - 84

Demonstrated evidence of advanced achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: Distinction (75% - 84%) High level of critical analysis (see above); good quality written / referenced / structured (headings / sub-headings) paper with logical flow between sections; informative figures / tables highlighting / summarizing important information; no grammatical / spelling errors.

7 (High Distinction) 85 - 100

Demonstrated evidence of exceptional achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: High Distinction (>85%) Outstanding level of critical analysis (including statistical interpretation / research design considerations) of recent and relevant literature; high quality written / referenced / structured (headings / sub-headings) paper with logical flow between sections; creative (original) and informative figures / tables highlighting / summarizing important information; no grammatical / spelling errors.

Additional course grading information

A final percentage mark will be rounded to the nearest whole number (e.g. 64.50 and above will be rounded to 65 and 64.49 and below will be rounded down to 64.)

Written Report

The SPMD7009 Project involves a self-selected project involving a current research topic in Sports and Exercise Medicine of clinical relevance to an individual medical practitioner s practice and interests. As a general guide, final project submissions will be 10 -15 pages in length (exclusive of references) and be reflective of the #4unit semester long course. Whilst the format for your SPMD7009 paper is flexible, it should typically be based on that of review / research papers published in high quality medical sources / journals (e.g., Cochrane Reviews, Clinical Evidence, Sports Medicine, American Journal of Sports Medicine, or other major Medical Journals). Given the variety of topics which may be undertaken, it is difficult to prescribe a specific number of references for FINAL inclusion in your paper but it should be COMPREHENSIVE (30 50 reviewed papers as a guide), RECENT (good representation of 70% + of recent references in last 5 years) and of the HIGHEST quality available (peer reviewed journals).
