This is a 4 unit research course that builds on content covered in SWSP3303 Foundations in Social Work Research. There is a strong emphasis on the application of research methods. A working knowledge of social research methods, including the capacity to choose the most appropriate methods to investigate particular research questions, to critically review social research, and to apply research findings to specific practice and policy contexts, is an essential component of social work practice. This course comprises two interrelated components: developing skills in critically reviewing existing research, and building a repertoire of research knowledge and skills. Students will independently complete an individual small-scale research project relevant to social work practice and produce a 6,000-8,000 word research report over Semester 1 and 2 in Year 4. The research project will be supervised by a member of the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work academic staff and involves the design, implementation, analysis and interpretation of data and written research report. Students will deliver an individual oral presentation to showcase their research.

Task description

This description is only a summary of the task. For full details, including the marking rubric, please refer to the course Learn UQ (Blackboard) site.

Overview

All research is located within existing knowledge and understandings of the research problem. The task here is to develop an initial research plan related to your topic and to be clear about what the problem is and how you will investigate it. The skills developed in writing a research plan in SWSP3303 will be useful here.

Although this assignment will be assessed and the mark contribute to the overall grade for SWSP4284 across the two semesters, there is opportunity to use the feedback provided to modify and develop the research plan for the final report.

This assessment requires you to conduct a targeted literature review and provide a rationale for conducting your research project. You will also need to think through the ethical issues for conducting your research project.

All research projects have received ethical clearance through UQ's Low and Negligible Risk Human Research Ethics Committee. After completion of this assessment, students will be required to follow the existing research protocols for conducting their research.

Details of the research proposal will be provided on Blackboard early in the semester.

Submission guidelines

All courses require students to submit an electronic version of their assignment via Blackboard. Please check the companion website assessment area for specific instructions on this process. A link will be made available in the assessment area of your Blackboard course to allow you to submit your assignment electronically.

The anti-plagiarism software TURNITIN is being used at UQ. The electronic version of your assignment will be submitted via Blackboard, using the TURNITIN software. Work submitted may be subjected to a plagiarism detection process. If this process is used then copies of this work would be retained and used as source material for conducting future plagiarism checks. Please refer to ITS help if you experience difficulties in submitting your assignments in Blackboard or using TURNITIN as instructed on the companion website.

Overview

Researching in the areas of social work and social policy requires that findings are shared strategically and appropriately to a range of stakeholder groups. This assessment provides opportunity to students to gain experience with presenting research in a conference format. It also provides students with an opportunity for feedback before the submission of the final report. The full day conferences will take place on Friday 10th October 2025 and Monday 13th October 2025 (second day may be needed depending on student enrolments). Students are required to attend the whole conference on their designated day and not just attend for their own presentation.

Task Description

  • Students will be allocated to a session in the conference related to their particular project group. The session will begin with an introduction from an academic staff member. This staff member will outline the project, brief rationale, sampling, recruitment, methodology and methods of the project. Each student in the project group will design and present a 10 minute oral presentation using Powerpoint.

Copies of the slides are required for the assessors and the course coordinator prior to the presentation. These will need to be submitted via Blackboard/Turnitin by 1pm on Wednesday, 8th October, 2025.

Task description

This description is only a summary of the task. For full details, including the marking rubric, please refer to the course Learn UQ (Blackboard) site.

Overview

Research reports are a key method of organising and sharing findings and considering the implications of the findings. The focus of this course is on the application of research skills to complete a small scale research project. The major and final assessment of the course is pulling together what you have done across the two semesters into a final research report. The report must communicate clearly the purpose, the research process and the main findings of the study, the evidence that supports the findings and the implications of the findings. Demonstrated knowledge of research processes, principles and language is a key criterion of this assessment.

Task Description

Each student will submit a final report of 6000-8000 words. Please note that a word count that is outside this range by 10%, either 10% less than 6000 words, or 10% more than 8000 words will incur a reduction of 10% of the total mark available for the assessment.

The report will draw on and develop the original research proposal submitted in Semester 1 and will include the data collection tool that was approved by the Low and Negligible Risk (LNR) Human Research Ethics Committee. In addition, information relating to sampling, the experience of data collection, the analysis, discussion and implications will be incorporated. There is opportunity to use the feedback from the conference presentation to improve the report.

Submission guidelines

All courses require students to submit an electronic version of their assignment via Blackboard. Please check the companion website assessment area for specific instructions on this process. A link will be made available in the assessment area of your Blackboard course to allow you to submit your assignment electronically.

The anti plagiarism software TURNITIN is being used at UQ.

Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

The maximum extension allowed is 7 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

Please note that extension requests for this final assessment have impact on students' ability to graduate in 2025. Any significant delay in submission will mean that grade results may not be available in time for graduation.

Applying for an extension

Extension requests are submitted online via my.UQ. Extension requests received in any other way will not be approved.

Information about applying for an extension can be found on my.UQ.

Extension guidelines

  • Extension requests should be submitted prior to the assessment deadline.
  • Extension requests must state the due date and the due time of the assessment.
