This course introduces the concept of sustainability and its relevance to contemporary society and the tourism, hospitality and event sectors. It examines the potential positive and negative impacts of tourism, hospitality and events on communities, economies and the environment, and provides students with strategies based on the principles of sustainable development to manage these. Employability is embedded through the emphasis on analytical skills to develop strategies and recommendations to maximise positive impacts and minimise potential negative impacts, for sustainable outcomes. Employability is further enhanced through an interactive field trip at a Brisbane site that exposes you to real tourism impacts.

Sustainability has emerged as a core concept in the discussion of the development of tourism and its related industries. Although the achievement of economic benefits remains the principal objective of many tourism activities, the impacts on the natural and built environment and on the host community have attracted increasing attention from researchers, industry and government.

This courseᅠintroduces studentsᅠto the environmental, socio-cultural and economic impacts of tourism, and theᅠstrategies needed to maximise potential positive impacts and minimise potential negative impacts in order to achieve sustainable outcomes.ᅠ

Task description

Individual Task/s

Sustainable Island - Tourism Edition is an educational game designed to challenge your thinking about sustainability. In your Sustainable Island Reflection (Assessment Task 1) you will demonstrate your learning in relation to sustainability and stakeholder collaboration and, importantly, how this will influence the way you will manage tourism, hospitality and/or events in the future.

1500 words (for Sustainable Island - Round Two Reflection, excluding template headings and reference list)

There are three (3) components to this assessment task:

  1. Week 1 - in the lecture you will be required to submit a short handwritten piece.
  2. Week 2 - in your tutorial you will play the game and complete the Sustainable Island - Round One Reflection template.
  3. Week 12 - in your tutorial you will play the game and complete the Sustainable Island - Round Two Reflection template.

Note: You will need to submit all three (3) components to receive a mark for this assessment task. While only the Sustainable Island - Round Two Reflection template counts towards your final grade you will need the information from 1. and 2. above to be able to complete Sustainable Island - Round Two Reflection. You will receive formative feedback, but not a mark, for your Sustainable Island - Round One Reflection.

Task description

Assessment Task 2 (Site Audit) and Assessment Task 3 (Sustainability Report) are related. The insights from Assessment Task 2 will be developed further in Assessment Task 3.

To complete Assessment Task 2 and Assessment Task 3 you need to select a site that attracts tourists (ie. tourist attraction/ precinct; accommodation; event venue).

Site considerations:

  • Make sure you can take photos at the site (eg. you can not take photos at a casino).
  • You may find it useful to be able to visit your site multiple times throughout the semester.
  • We will be discussing Brisbane's South Bank in detail as an example so you CANNOT do South Bank as your site.
  • You must have your site approved by your tutor in the tutorial in Week 3.
  • Your research will ONLY be based on publicly available information and your site visit. You CANNOT contact the site manager, its employees, or visitors to the site.

Assessment Task 2

Individual Task

1000 words (excluding template headings and reference list).

Throughout the semester you will learn about the potential environmental, socio-cultural and economic impacts of activities associated with tourism, hospitality and events (THE). For your Site Audit you are required to complete the Site Audit Template provided on Blackboard. We will work through an example in class.

To complete the Site Audit Template you are required to:

  • State the name of your site;
  • Provide a 200 word overview of key information about your site. This will include information such as the location; physical description; activities offered; visitor numbers.
  • Identify and briefly describe the positive and negative environmental, socio-cultural and economic impacts of activities associated with THE at your site.
  • Provide evidence for each impact you identify. In the majority of instances this evidence will be photographs you take at the site. Where this is not possible you can provide alternative supporting evidence (eg. publicly available annual reports).

Note: some types of impacts may be more prominent in some sites than others. For example, Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) may feature impacts on the natural environment; Star Casino Brisbane may feature impacts on the built environment; Suncorp Stadium may focus on economic impacts. Therefore, there may not be an equal number of impacts for each type of impact. Nevertheless, all types of impacts should be included in your Site Audit.
