This course aims to introduce students to the basic skills of consecutive interpreting. Students will study the preparation, writing and delivery of short, set-time speeches on a wide variety of topics, thus familiarising them with the type of language and set expressions they may encounter when working as interpreters. Emphasis will be placed on content, structure, delivery and non-verbal skills. Note-taking will be introduced so students can learn to take effective notes in actual interpreting situations.

Aims and outcomes

  1. be equipped with the English and LOTE language skills required for a public speaking situation and prepare and effectively deliver short speeches in English and LOTE for a variety of scenarios with minimum reference to notes.
  2. use basic skills in performing dialogue interpreting on non-technical topics and skilfully manage the three-party interaction in both face-to-face interpreting and remote interpreting.
  3. take effective notes to aid dialogue interpreting.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

LO1.

Students will have 5 minutes each to prepare for 3-minute impromptu speeches in English on a randomly-drawn topic with minimum reference to notes. The speeches will be based on one of the speech categories covered in class during the first 5 weeks of the semester.

This assessment task is to be completed in-person. The use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT) tools will not be permitted. Any attempted use of AI or MT may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

The maximum extension allowed is 7 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

Maximum extension length allows assessors to give timely feedback before subsequent tasks are due.

Task description

Students will be required to interpret dialogues in the consecutive mode. Each dialogues will be played from an audio recording. One week prior to the test, students will receive the topics for the consecutive monologue tasks. On the day of the test, students will not have any preparation time for these tasks.

Course grade description: The student fails to demonstrate any understanding of the concepts introduced in the course and fails to demonstrate any proficiency in the required skill areas in order to achieve the course objectives. Assessments were either not complete or showed no effort. Student is unable to follow the accepted norms or use the range of language expected in Chinese/Japanese and English public speaking. Output is limited to familiar vocabulary and predictable structures, and delivery is extremely poor. Very little of the target language information is accurate. Almost all of the source language message is inaccurate or omitted, with many unjustified additions. Target language output is characterised by extremely unnatural expression and numerous grammatical and syntactic errors which distort the meaning and make the output extremely difficult to comprehend. Delivery is uneven - ranging from very slow and hesitant to very fast, with many pauses and corrections. Output is largely incomprehensible.

2 (Fail) 25 - 44

Minimal evidence of achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: The student fails to demonstrate a basic understanding of the concepts introduced in the course and has not developed proficiency in the skill areas to achieve the course objectives. Assessments were either not complete or showed lack of effort. Student demonstrates a lack of understanding of, and inability to use, the accepted norms and range of language expected in Chinese/Japanese and English public speaking. Output is limited to familiar vocabulary and predictable structures, and overall delivery is poor. Only some of the information given in the target language is accurate. Most of the source language message is inaccurate or omitted, with frequent unjustified additions. Target language output is characterised by very unnatural expression and numerous grammatical and syntactic errors which distort the meaning and make the output difficult to comprehend. Delivery is uneven - ranging from very slow and hesitant to very fast, with numerous pauses and corrections. Much of the output is incomprehensible.

3 (Marginal Fail) 45 - 49

Demonstrated evidence of developing achievement of course learning outcomes

Course grade description: The student demonstrates some understanding of the concepts introduced in the course, and has developed some proficiency in the skill areas. However, performance in assessment items does not show sufficient effort or competence, and adequate progress in public speaking skills during the course was not demonstrated. Frequent errors in structure, content, language and idiom, fluency and appropriateness. Student fails to use a range of vocabulary and sentence patterns expected in Chinese/Japanese and English public speaking. More than half of the target language output is inaccurate and/or not readily comprehensible. There are many meaning errors, omissions and unjustified additions. Frequent grammatical/syntactic errors and unnatural expressions distort the meaning, with the result that the output is frequently incomprehensible. Delivery and presentation frequently poor. Inappropriate linguistic style and register. Inability to use appropriate terms and expressions.

4 (Pass) 50 - 64

Demonstrated evidence of functional achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: The student demonstrates a basic understanding of the concepts introduced in the course and has developed sufficient proficiency in some of the skill areas to achieve some of the course objectives. The standard of performance in assessment tasks is adequate but could be improved. Despite some lapses, the student usually succeeds in following some of the required norms and communicating the general message. The student demonstrates some ability to use some of the key vocabulary items and sentence patterns used in public speaking. Delivery may be affected by pauses, hesitations, or issues with pronunciation or accent but overall the broad message is comprehensible. More than half of the source language message is accurately conveyed. There will be a number of meaning errors, ranging from major to minor. There will be omissions and/or additions of information. Many details and nuances will be omitted or inaccurate. Register and target language expression will often be inappropriate. Natural expression will sometimes be used, but there will also be frequent instances of non-idiomatic usage. Frequent grammatical and syntactic errors will detract from the quality and clarity of the message. Delivery may be quite fluent in some parts but hesitant in others. Overall the main points of the message will be comprehensible, though some parts may not always be entirely clear or accurate.

5 (Credit) 65 - 74

Demonstrated evidence of proficient achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: The student demonstrates a good understanding of the concepts introduced in the course and has developed proficiency in most of the skill areas to achieve most of the course objectives. Assessment tasks are completed to a good standard, and clear progress in public speaking skills is evident throughout the course. The student generally demonstrates the ability to use a range of language, including key vocabulary items and sentence patterns used in public speaking, despite some errors. Delivery is generally fluent and confident, though subject to some fluctuation. Communication is generally effective and consistent despite a few lapses. Most of the important points of the source language message will be accurately conveyed in the target language, with only a few errors. There will be omissions and additions of information, although these should not be significant. Some of the details and nuances of the original may be inaccurate or omitted. Variety and appropriateness of target language expression and register will fluctuate. Delivery may be fluent in some parts and quite hesitant in others. Non-idiomatic usage and grammatical /syntactic errors will be present and may at times distort the meaning, but generally the main points of the target language message will be readily comprehensible.

6 (Distinction) 75 - 84

Demonstrated evidence of advanced achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: The student demonstrates a very good understanding of the concepts introduced in the course and has developed a high level of proficiency in all skill areas to achieve most of the course objectives. Assessment items are completed to a high standard, and good progress in public speaking skills is evident throughout the course. Occasional minor lapses in accuracy, fluency and appropriateness do not affect communication of the message. The student demonstrates the ability to use a broad range of language, including key vocabulary items and sentence patterns used in public speaking. Delivery is mostly fluent and confident. Most of the important points of the source language message will be grasped and accurately conveyed in the target language with no serious errors of meaning. Most of the details and nuances will also be accurately grasped and conveyed. Target language expression will be reasonably varied and appropriate to the source language text, while register for the most part will accurately reflect that of the source language. Fluency will be generally good, though subject to some fluctuation. Output will feature only a few instances of non-idiomatic usage or grammatical / syntactic errors, but these will rarely distort the meaning. The message will generally be clearly comprehensible.

7 (High Distinction) 85 - 100

Demonstrated evidence of exceptional achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: The student demonstrates an excellent understanding of the concepts introduced in the course and has developed outstanding proficiency in all skill areas to achieve all of the course objectives. Assessment items are completed to an exceptional standard, and excellent progress in public speaking skills is evident throughout the course. Some minor errors may be evident but these do not detract from communication of the message and overall impression of excellence. The student demonstrates an understanding of and ability to use a broad range of language with ease and confidence, including key vocabulary items and sentence patterns used in public speaking. Delivery is fluent and confident. The source language message will be conveyed in the target language accurately and fluently, with few errors of meaning. All important points, details and nuances of the original speech will be accurately conveyed. There will be very few omissions or additions of information, and any that occur should be negligible and not distort the speaker's message. Target language expression will be varied, appropriate to the source language message and in the correct register. Delivery will be fluent and confident, with few hesitations. There may be a few cases of non-idiomatic usage or grammatical / syntactic errors, but these will be negligible and will not distort the meaning or clarity of the message. Overall performance will be close to that of a professional working at general interpreter level.
