This course covers the advanced translation knowledge and skills required to attempt NAATI's "Certified Advanced Translator" level. Students will be trained in a broad range of practical translation, research, intercultural, and technological skills which are required by translators of advanced high level and technical documentation.

Aims and outcomes
This course develops key translation skills and introduces students to text types and translation issues specific to advanced level translation.

Task description
Students will be required to translate one English passage into Chinese/Japanese in class. Working time 90 minutes + reading time 5 minutes. The topic of the text will be communicated to students prior to the assessment, the assessment text will be approximately 400 English words long. The translation passages will be available on Blackboard.

This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT). Students are advised that the use of AI or MT technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

As a minimum requirement to pass this course, students must submit more than 70% of all translation assignments, including non-assessed translations.Exam details

Task description
Students will be required to submit weekly translation assignments from LOTE to English and English to LOTE for classes between Weeks 2 and 13. Each translation passage is equivalent to approximately 400 English words long and will be available on Blackboard. The translation assignment for discussion in Week 12 class will be formally assessed (45%). The translation assignments in other weeks will be reviewed but not marked.
All translation assignments are compulsory, and students will be required to comment on their work. Weekly submission and commentary will count for assessment (5%). Use footnotes to comment on specific points in the translation, such as the approach taken, any problems encountered and the basis for the decisions made. Make three footnote comments each week. Students who will have submitted their four translation assignments by each due date and made appropriate footnote comments each week receive a full mark.

Use of terminology is always appropriate, and any necessary background research has been done. Able to translate within a reasonable time frame, and all homework is submitted on time. Demonstrated evidence of exceptional achievement of course learning outcomes. Course grade description: As for 6, plus some of the following: Creative solutions and evidence of special flair for target-language expression. Ability to work at professional speed. Translations could be submitted as professional work with virtually no need for checking or rewriting. Excellent professional manner is maintained. |
