This course builds on the translation skills developed in the first year of the program and focuses on the idea of adaptation and 'transcreation'. Topics to be covered include audio-visual translation and the translation of advertisement materials, and students will explore creative solutions for various settings that involve specific constraints and requirements.

Aims and outcomes
Students will be trained to develop creative translation skills and abilities to identify and analyse translation issues specific to the field, enabling them to devise creative solutions through versatile and critical thinking.

Task description
Presentation 1 - 25%
Choose a source text in English to translate into Chinese/Japanese. The source material must be audiovisual, promotional/advertisement OR literary and must not have been translated into your Chinese/Japanese before, i.e., its translation must not be publicly available. The length of the source text may vary. You do not need to translate a whole book, for example, but you should translate a sufficient volume for this assessment task.
While translating the source text, be conscious of your decision-making process in handling various translation-related issues, such as the context of the source text and its translation, culturally specific and/or linguistically challenging expressions, and stylistic issues. Present an analysis of your translation and your translation process/strategies in English. The analysis should explain how you handled the translation issues and developed creative and effective solutions to the issues, with reference to constraints and/or requirements relevant to the source text.
Each presentation should be between 8 and 10 minutes, including a brief Q&A session. Use PowerPoint slides to present your work and submit the slides after the presentation.
Presentation 2 - 25%
Choose a source text in Chinese/Japanese to translate into English. The source material must be audiovisual, promotional/advertisement OR literary and must not have been translated into English before, i.e., its translation must not be publicly available. Choose material in a different field from the one you used in Presentation 1. If you worked on a literary text in Presentation 1, for example, you must translate either audiovisual or promotional/advertisement material in Presentation 2. The length of the source text may vary. You do not need to translate a whole book, for example, but you should translate a sufficient volume for this assessment task.
While translating the source text, be conscious of your decision-making process in handling various translation-related issues, such as the context of the source text and its translation, culturally specific and/or linguistically challenging expressions, and stylistic issues. This assessment task is to be completed in person. The use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT) tools will not be permitted. Any attempted use of AI or MT may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

The maximum extension allowed is 28 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

Task description
Write a reflective essay on the translation of course materials between Weeks 1 and 13. The essay should explain how you handled various translation issues you encountered and how you developed creative and effective solutions to the issues, with reference to constraints and/or requirements relevant to the source text.
It should also contain discussions of specific comprehension problems and specific target-language problems and include your observations about how you improved in these areas over the semester. You do not need to refer to all course materials in your essay, but your discussion of specific translation examples must cover the three areas of audiovisual translation, translation of advertisement/promotional material, and literary translation. Length: 2000 words plus or minus a 10% allowance, excluding any captions, diagrams, tables, or appendices. State the number of words at the end of your essay.
The essay must:
- Be typed on A4 paper (1.5 line spacing);
- Use 12-point Calibri font;
- Include any tables or diagrams in their appropriate position in the text, not at the end;
- Demonstrate familiarity with relevant literature and an ability to evaluate the material critically;
- Use the APA referencing style; and
- Acknowledge when other people’s ideas are used.
This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT). Students are advised that the use of AI or MT technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
