This course introduces students to the international travel and tourism sector. Adopting a systems theory approach, the sectors of the international tourism sector are explored, including the role of events in driving tourism development and the importance of transport systems. Whilst the major focus is on private sector firms, consideration is given to government influence and involvement. Employability is embedded in this course progressing students’ professional presentation skills to influence decision making.

Many tourism and event businesses are small to medium enterprises (SMEs) that sit within the private sector. This course takes a systems approach to ensure your success as a manager of these tourism or event SMEs. It does this by guiding you through the complex tourism system within whichᅠa tourism or event SME operates.

Task description

Note: Assessment Task 1 (Proposal), Assessment Task 2 (System) and Assessment Task 3 (Transport Sub System) are related, ie, the planning and feedback from Assessment Task 1 will be used by you to develop Assessment Task 2. Likewise, the planning and feedback from Assessment Task 2 will be used by you to develop Assessment Task 3. Therefore, it is important that you choose a scenario, as per the criteria below, that is of interest to you.

Scenario:

You are in a management position at a privately owned company that manages a tourist attraction(s) and/ or event(s). As a manager of this company, you are one of a number of people on the Executive Committee. Your company has been very successful over recent years but you have some concerns that the Committee is starting to get a bit complacent and is losing sight of the bigger picture. You have been doing some part time study and you have been learning about tourism systems. Leiper's Tourism System (LTS) stood out to you as a good model to apply to one tourist attraction or event that your company manages.

Your choice of one tourist attraction or event must be a small to medium enterprise (SME). NOTE: Mega events like the Olympics and tourist attractions like Disneyland are too big and are therefore not suitable.

Assessment Tasks 1, 2 and 3: IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Through your three (3) assessment tasks this semester, you will need to justify to the Executive Committee the benefits of applying LTS to your chosen tourist attraction or event. This is how the three tasks link together:

  1. With Assessment Task 1 (Proposal), you will get feedback as you start to develop your ideas (i.e., before you need to present this to the Executive Committee).
  2. With Assessment Task 2 (System), you will provide a recorded (and scripted) powerpoint presentation for the Committee.
  3. With Assessment Task 3 (Transport Sub System Report), you will provide additional information as requested by the Committee.

When choosing a tourist attraction or event, therefore, please note:

  • The tourist attraction or event you choose needs to be real. It should be an attraction or event that you are familiar with and/or that you have visited.
  • Each student must have a different tourist attraction or event. Therefore, the quicker you select and confirm your tourist attraction or event with your tutor, the better chance you will have of getting your choice of attraction or event. An updated list will be managed by the tutors and made available on Blackboard throughout the semester.
  • The management company you are representing does not need to be real, but it can be the company that owns the tourist attraction or event.

Assessment Task 1: Presentation - Tourism System Proposal

Your challenge is that other members of the Committee do not have a shared understanding of Leiper's Tourism System. Before you take your ideas to the Committee, you decide to run them past your lecturer and classmates to get some feedback. You have been given 2 (maximum 3) minutes to do a brief in-person presentation to the class.

Your presentation must include:

  • a brief description of the tourist attraction or event your company is managing;
  • identification of one (1) target market and its generating region;
  • a description of the transit region;
  • a description of the destination region.
  • only one (1) powerpoint slide for your presentation.

Note:

  • Your one (1) powerpoint slide will be submitted via the course Blackboad site a day before your presentation.
  • As per UQ Business School expectations, all presentations will be recorded for assessment purposes only. They will not be made available for other students to view.
  • Your presentation will have a peer reviewed component which means you must be in attendance and provide feedback for all presentations in your tutorial.

Hint:

  • Use your 2 (maximum 3) minutes well. You will need to be clear, concise and well rehearsed.
  • We will discuss presentation expectations and marking criteria early in the semester (Week 2 and 3 tutorials).

This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT). Students are advised that the use of AI or MT technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Task description

Scenario:

Now that you have received feedback from your proposed tourism system (Assessment Task 1), you are confident that applying Leiper's Tourism System (LTS) to your tourist attraction or event would be useful to ensure its longevity. You have approached the Chair of the Executive Committee for your company and they have given you space on the agenda at the next Committee meeting. However, to give Committee members time to prepare for the discussion in the meeting, you have been asked to provide a 10 minute (12 minutes maximum), pre recorded scripted powerpoint presentation.

Assessment Task 2: Tourism System Presentation

You are required to prepare a 10 minute (12 minutes maximum) powerpoint presentation that Committee members can view prior to the next Executive Committee meeting. The Chair has requested that you pre record your presentation and that you also provide a referenced script.

Your presentation/script must include:

  • a description of your chosen tourist attraction or event;
  • an image of your system. This will be based on LTS and it can be either computer generated or hand drawn and incorporated into your powerpoint slide deck;
  • a justification for why you believe applying LTS to your attraction or event is beneficial from a management perspective; and
  • a profile of one (1) existing or potential target market for your attraction or event.
  • THEN, based on your chosen target market, also identify and justify
  • the characteristics of an appropriate generating region, including why this information is relevant;
  • the characteristics of the transit region, including why this information is relevant;
  • the characteristics of the destination, including why this information is relevant;
  • two (2) external influences that could impact your system, including the potential nature of their impact.

PLEASE NOTE WELL:

  • Your research will ONLY be based on publicly available information. Do NOT contact the management company or the tourist attraction or event.
  • Your script will be written in conversational English, ie. as if you were talking to the Committee in person.
  • Think about your presentation from the perspective of your audience (Executive Committee). These are managers from a range of areas (sales, human resources, finance, etc) who do not have any prior knowledge of Leiper's Tourism System.
  • Your presentation style is important. If you do not make your presentation engaging, it is unlikely that the Committee will listen to what you have to say. Even though you are working from a script, you need to make sure the content is framed for your audience, and you are well rehearsed with using your camera, and your use of voice intonation, expressions, pauses etc. We will discuss your expected presentation style further in tutorials.
  • References are NOT required in the recording. However, references ARE required in the written script.

Formatting:

Recording:

  • Record to powerpoint. You will be shown how to do this in the tutorials.
  • Include your video in the bottom right corner of the screen.

Script:

  • Line spacing: 1.5
  • Font: Arial, Times New Roman, or Calbri
  • Font size: 12
  • Referencing: APA7

Task description

The Executive Committee was impressed with your powerpoint presentation (Assessment Task 2) but they would like you to provide more information about the transport aspect of your system. The Committee has requested that you submit a transport sub system in the format of a project report.

Assessment Task 3: Transport Sub System Report

In your powerpoint presentation you described the transit region for the tourism system for your chosen tourist attraction or event. The Committee would like you to elaborate on this further to identify the role of transport throughout your tourism system (ie. not just in the transit region).

Structure your report using the following sections:

  1. System overview (200-250 words): provide a brief description of your tourism system from Assessment 2. Include an image of your (revised) tourism system diagram from Assessment 2.
  2. Modes of transport:
  • identify each type of Way and explain why each one is, or is not, relevant for your transport subsystem;
  • for each Way that is relevant for your transport subsystem, describe the relevant carrying unit(s); their motive power(s); and terminal(s);
  • include a diagram of your transport subsystem as it relates to your tourism system from Assessment 2.

3. Transit route - an example:

  • identify one (1) transit route that your target market might use for your tourism system;
  • detail your chosen transit route from a visitor perspective;
  • detail your chosen transit route from a management perspective (ie. what planning is required 'behind the scenes' to make this a seamless transit route from the visitor's perspective).

4. Identify any emerging trends that could impact your transport subsystem. For each trend you identify, discuss the potential nature of its impact.

5. Justify why understanding the transport subsystem is relevant from the Committee's perspective.

Note:

  • You will need to provide references. These may be from a combination of academic articles, industry reports and credible online websites. (NOTE: If you are uncertain about any potential sources/references, please check with your tutor before writing your report.)
  • You will be prompted in your weekly tutorials to apply relevant theory to this assessment task so that you are building up your skills and knowledge progressively across the semester. We will also discuss this assessment task in more depth during class.
