Veterinary clinical practice encompass a broad range of skills required to be a successful veterinary practitioner and to proceed to the clinical years of the BVSc program. Broadly, this course will provide essential introductory training in both clinical approach and reasoning, as well as practical clinical skills. Students will develop skills in physical examination of different species, foundational clinical skills in radiography, radiology, surgery and anaesthesia, critical thinking and problem solving skills, the problems-based approach to clinical practice, and veterinary medical ethics and animal welfare and their application to clinical decision making.
This course will provide students with foundational clinical principles,ᅠpreparing them forᅠentry intoᅠthe clinical years of the BVSc program. In VETS3070, students will be required to attain competence in clinical exam techniques, there is also a short module onᅠapplied animal welfare. There will be further development ofᅠtheᅠclinical reasoning, evidence based medicine and professionalismᅠmaterialᅠintroduced in VETS1018 and principles of anaesthesia, dentistry, surgery, radiography and radiology will be introduced. ᅠ ᅠ
Course requirements
Assumed background
During this course, students will draw on their prior knowledge of anatomy and physiology, animal handling, evidence based medicine and veterinary professionalism. Students are strongly advised to revise first and second year anatomy and physiology.

Aims and outcomes
The aims of this course are to:ᅠ
Expand on and apply clinical reasoning and professionalism skills including a deeper understanding of animal welfare.
Achieve basic competence in clinical examination of common veterinary species.
Introduce clinical principles relating to surgery, anaesthesia, dentistry, veterinary triage and emergency management,ᅠand diagnostic imaging.ᅠ
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:
LO1.
Explain important considerations for each step in the process of diagnostic clinical reasoning and demonstrate an ability to reflect on thought processes. Apply the theory and practical skills learnt in the programme thus far to clinical scenarios.
LO2.
Describe technical, ethical, and animal welfare principles associated with production animal and companion animal practice and apply these and reflect on their influence in the context of veterinary examination and decision making.
LO3.
Demonstrate an ability to safely perform a comprehensive physical examination in species commonly encountered in veterinary practice and then use this information in addition to the clinical history to develop a complete problems list.
LO4.
Describe the principles of surgery as they relate to preparation of the surgeon and the patient and the various aspects of good surgical technique. Competently demonstrate relevant practical skills.
LO5.
Describe the principles and practice of diagnostic imaging and radiation safety in veterinary practice. Demonstrate knowledge of normal radiographic anatomy.
LO6.
Describe the principles of triage and the management of emergent conditions for veterinary patients and the techniques necessary for its delivery. Competently demonstrate relevant practical skills.
LO7.
Explain the principles of anaesthesia as they relate to patient preparation, anaesthetic agent selection, anaesthesia maintenance, and analgesic therapy. Competently demonstrate relevant practical skills.
LO8.
Discuss the principles of dentistry in small animal practice including preventative dental medicine and prophylaxis in dogs and cats. Competently demonstrate relevant practical skills.
LO9.
Identify and explain clinical examination techniques relevant to common behavioural problems in small animals.

Students must achieve 50% overall to pass this course.
Supplementary assessment
Supplementary assessment is available for this course.
Should you fail a course with a grade of 3, you may be eligible for supplementary assessment. Refer to my.UQ for information on supplementary assessment and how to apply.
Supplementary assessment provides an additional opportunity to demonstrate you have achieved all the required learning outcomes for a course.
If you apply and are granted supplementary assessment, the type of supplementary assessment set will consider which learning outcome(s) have not been met.
Supplementary assessment can take any form (such as a written report, oral presentation, examination or other appropriate assessment) and may test specific learning outcomes tailored to the individual student, or all learning outcomes.
To receive a passing grade of 3S4, you must obtain a mark of 50% or more on the supplementary assessment.
Additional assessment information
Assessment using the Inspera platform
Students must click the ‘SUBMIT NOW’ button on the summary page to submit their answers. After submission, a confirmation will appear on the dashboard indicating that the answers have been submitted and can no longer be edited.
For all exams lasting 60, 90, 120, or 180 minutes, an additional 10 minutes of planning time is provided to read the questions and plan responses, though students may start working immediately if they choose.
It’s crucial to ensure your laptop meets the device requirements for Inspera assessments before the exam. If you don’t have a suitable laptop, you can borrow one from the Library. Check Get Familiar with Inspera for the most up-to-date information about using the platform. Note that power outlets will not be available during exams.
