WRIT1200 introduces the fundamentals of creativity, writing and storytelling for communication professionals and media producers.
WRIT1200 is a coreᅠcomponent of the first year of the Bachelor of Communication. The course is compulsory for bothᅠPublic Relations and Digital Mediaᅠmajors. It is also a compulsory course for the Professional Writing and Communication major in the Bachelor of Arts.ᅠStudents are introduced to fundamental principlesᅠand practices of writing, including creativity & design, reader engagement, storytelling, and the editing process.

Aims and outcomes
This course is designed to introduce students to a range of concepts and practices fundamental to their development as communication professionals and to the production of creative and effective writing.

Task description
The major piece of assessment - the writing project - involves two stages. Stage one is the proposal, to be submitted in the form of a poster presentation. Students will be required to present their proposal to the class in either Week 8 or 9 (the presentation schedule will be determined by tutors earlier in the semester).

This assessment task is to be completed in-person. The use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT) tools will not be permitted. Any attempted use of AI or MT may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
All presentations will be recorded for marking purposes via recording facilities available where the assessment takes place (eg. ECHO360, Zoom, camera device)
Recordings will be retained by the School of Communication and Arts for at least 12 months from the release of the final grade for the course.
Recordings will be stored in a secure manner and will only be accessed by authorised school staff for the purposes of:
- Moderation of marking
- Provision of feedback to the student(s) recorded; and/or
- Re-marking following a successful re-mark application.

Task description
In stage two of the writing project, students incorporate feedback on their proposal and further develop the project. The final product will be produced by hand and then scanned and submitted as a PDF for assessment.

This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT). Students are advised that the use of AI or MT technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

The end of semester exam will involve: short answer questions; editing and proofreading exercises. The short answer questions will require students to reflect on their writing project and explain their creative choices.

Submission guidelines

Additional learning activity information
Many tutorials in this course will involve hands-on activities. You will need lined paper and a pen/pencil to write with each week. Some weeks you will also need to bring your own scissors, glue stick and plain, unlined paper, in addition to whatever pens and/or pencils you enjoy using to write, plan, doodle, and draw. No special equipment or artistic talent is required, just your willingness to play on the page! We will provide collage materials when required but you are also welcome to find more and share with the class as your project progresses.

Communication Expectations
While you are a student at UQ, all communication must be conducted according to the UQ Student Code of Conduct. The UQ Library has a helpful Communicate and collaborate online module.
- Email is the primary way for you to send messages to, and receive information from, the School and our staff.
- You must use your UQ email address (not a private address) to communicate with staff.
- You should add a clear subject line, including course code, and a 2-3 word statement.
- You can send email at any time, however please do not expect responses outside normal working hours (Monday to Friday from ~8am to ~5pm).
