This course allows students to undertake an internship and related work-integrated learning, or a research project on a topic decided in consultation with the course coordinator.

This course consists of an industry internship in the field of writing, editing, and publishing, or communication. Students will undertake 80-100 hours of work-integrated learning, "solve" a problem for their provider, and write a reflective essay.

Task description

Identify a problem or opportunity in the workplace where you are undertaking your internship. It could be a system that could be streamlined, a lack of documentation in some aspect of work flow, or an idea for software or equipment that would make things easier for management or employees. Write up a 700-1,000 word proposal:


  • Paragraph 1: a concise statement of the problem or opportunity (9 marks)
  • Paragraphs 2 & 3: your ideas for resolving it (15 marks)
  • Paragraph 4: any resourcing issues applicable to your solution (6 marks)

Feel free to talk through with your internship provider, but please make sure they know this is a hypothetical only. If they want you to implement the solution, they will let you know.


This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT). Students are advised that the use of AI or MT technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Task description

The student will submit a reflective journal of 2,500-3,000 words, based on experiences and observations during their internship. The journal may include up to 1500 words of written material, if such written material was composed for the internship provider, for example, media releases, blog posts, editorial reports. If there is a commercial-in-confidence requirement at your workplace, you will need to de-identify these before submission.

Communication Expectations 

While you are a student at UQ, all communication must be conducted according to the UQ Student Code of Conduct. The UQ Library has a helpful Communicate and collaborate online module.  

  • Email is the primary way for you to send messages to, and receive information from, the School and our staff.  
  • You must use your UQ email address (not a private address) to communicate with staff.   
  • You should add a clear subject line, including course code, and a 2-3 word statement.  
  • You can send email at any time, however please do not expect responses outside normal working hours (Monday to Friday from ~8am to ~5pm).
